When you are discriminated against for age or disability
After you do a retrospect and make sure you have a claim. These firms are good at keeping records of incidents and putting together a file before they pull the trigger such as firing someone. For example, PIPs are not primarily to improve you, it’s for them to say “look we gave him/her a chance and they’re just terrible”
Seen plenty of these in both the big4 and national firms; moreso if they feel that you are the type of person that would sue the company.

There are time limits that vary by state as to how long you have to file these type of claims - and they are different for age vs ADA. Wait too long and you cannot file claim.
Another factor is whether you have an employment agreement that forces you to arbitration. They can do this for age not sex discrimination. Big 4 have won cases forcing arbitration on age claims.
