I have two years of automotive/aerospace manufacturing experience and am looking for new opportunities. I recently applied to a Solution Engineer - Commercial Manufacturing, Automotive, Energy (MAE) role at Salesforce, and it sounds like a great fit. Is anyone willing to offer me a referral or advice on how to move forward in the hiring process? Salesforce
Hi there. Ex Deloitte Sr Mgr here, currently in tech pre sales (SaaS / MarTech). Recently spoke to both Salesforce and Adobe recruiters for roles that I thought were lateral moves (Sr SA / Sr SC), therefore I did not proceed with the selection process. The recruiters from both companies told me they typically hire at that level, and people are considered for promotion to Principal in 1 to 2 years. I found that odd. Is that right? What’s the typical TC for SAs and SCs there? (15+ yrs exp).

I can totally relate. Doesn’t seem like SAP is promoting much (except “Cloud leader” marketing narratives) these days.
Not to mention SE/SAs being treated more and more like demo factories and less like strategic technical advisors.
The hard part of jumping to SFDC or SNow will be that you lack the expertise in their solutions for the salary you’re looking for.
What about SAP partners or SIs who specialize in whatever part of SAP you work in?
The ranges at ServiceNow are pretty low from what I’ve heard, but they can make up for it with spiffs etc. But the actual TC isn’t amazing and they don’t offer much stock anymore. Friend of mine was offered advisory there and they came in around $230k ote
I recently got an offer from ServiceNow for Advisory. 240k negotiated to 250k OTE and 15k/year in stock. A few years ago they were handing out a lot more stock but have tightened that belt. It’s very rare for them to hire Senior Advisory as an external, not going to happen if you don’t already have significant platform experience. If you’re in VHCOL I could see 260-270k OTE and another 20k or so in stock. They try to sell you on all their spiffs which are definitely generous for pre-sales but still not enough to bridge the gap. I have a similar problem. I’m a level where to make switch with it I’d be at a level I don’t have platform experience for.
I did love working at Salesforce for pre-sales. Organization is top notch.
OP, what’s your salary/commission/RSU breakdown of that 300k?
i’m pretty close to the top of the ttc range for this level so yeah minimal raises but a lot of RSU grants, even off cycle. just had a mgmt change recently but the feedback has been i definitely deserve it but with all the org changes and uncertainty it’s tough to push a promo through. and last annual cycle it was you’re ready but i could only give you 2.55% with the t4 and that seemed like a miss so i skipped.
all BS
and if not Salesforce or ServiceNow..then where?
all very valid and i know i’m fortunate but i also know i can get more. yeah i went from t3-2 as a consultant to t3-3 when i moved to presales. about 150k in unvested rsus but 20 or so vests this month. i’m pretty highly utilized but my manager does a good time protecting my time for qualified opps. my situation is really ideal and i’m seen as a go-to person for my product and area - but i know i deserve the principal title and want more $$
Choose wisely and take a good, hard look into what some of the above comments are trying to tell you.
Realities.
- SF’s environment sounds as bad if not worse than SAP’s right now.
- How are you getting paid at SF? They don’t view SAP as competition and vice versa.
- SN is you starting over with a new platform. You’re not going to be a go-to.
- At either SF, SN, or any other company, how are you going to start pulling more stock?
You have to do what is best for you and yours, especially when it comes to money. Make sure it’s not simply about chasing a title and a few extra dollars in your pocket.
Be sure to be very aware of the cons of a move during the current climate.
How many total YOE?
5 implementation and coming up on another 5 in presales. 10 total
yeah that’s a great point and what i’ve seen in a few interviews i’ve had already. the partners and SIs seem to pay less and require more travel

Your comp level is about 25-50 percentile for Principal SE at Salesforce.
Coach
Look for lead SE positions. They may consider hiring you as a principal if it make sense, but probably an exception. We just hired a lead SE and I think he makes more than me (I’m Principal)
175/75 is really great money. You’re making more than many Principals. If you’re getting off cycle RSUs too, then you’re highly valued.
You’ve been T3-3 the entire 5 years in PreSales?
How much do you have in unvested RSUs? What would you be walking away from?
What is your utilization %?
Do you enjoy your team and management chain?
@OP—any updates? Did ServiceNow balk at your number? Have you jumped ship?
