Depends what you mean here. There’s not really any such thing as toning - you can either lose fat, add muscle or both. Things like spinning will help you lose fat and if there’s a more wattage focused class you’ll build leg muscle. Losing fat on arms etc will give a more “toned” appearance but you won’t build muscle there by cycling. Alternatively HIIT classes will generally do more all round depending on the type and class but CrossFit style will focus a bit more on strength generally. Worth bearing in mind that muscle burns more calories than fat so building good muscle will allow you to eat more and will make you “look” better while still carrying a higher body fat percentage whereas purely decreasing body fat percentage is hard.
Sorry for the slightly longer answer but I’d ask what you want - if you want functional fitness and to look good naked, I’d recommend more strength and conditioning focused classes. If you just want to lose fat, this is misty going to come from diet so do steady state cardio with 90% focus on clean eating. Alternatively if you have an exercise goal in mind (eg look better but be able to run a 5k) then more specific training will do both.
Again, apologies for the long answer but hopefully useful!
Agree with EY2. If you want to lose fat you could seriously do zero cardio and still lose about the same amount of fat by eating at a caloric deficit.
If you want to make it easier long term to stay thin and look better, strength training is the path, for both men and women. Muscle tissue is a lot denser (smaller per unit of weight) than fat, so even if you stayed the same scale weight, you would look a lot thinner by gaining muscle. Muscle tissue also burns a LOT more calories per pound than fat, so for every pound of muscle you gain, you burn a lot more calories every day, whether you work out or not. It also means than when you cut (eat at a caloric deficit), you will lose fat faster because you can create a bigger deficit, and it will be easier to keep it off because those muscles will continue to burn more calories daily. Contrary to the myth, women do not become “bulky” with strength training unless they take steroids.
Cardio is useful for cardiovascular health, but it has a few dirty secrets. It makes your body processes more efficient—it lowers your daily caloric expenditure for the same amount of movement. Long slow cardio is also catabolic—it reduces muscle mass (HIIT is better at not doing this), doing the opposite of all of the above. It also doesn’t really make that much difference in fat loss, especially if you “reward yourself” with extra food because you worked out.
I know you won’t believe me, since the fitness industry endlessly pushes cardio, so after you spend years not getting the results you want, look into strength training. Two people who know their shit are Mark Rippetoe (Book: Starting Strength) and Mike Matthews (Book for women: Thinner Leaner Stronger, for men: Bigger Leaner Stronger). Starting Strength is a better beginner strength program IMO, but Mathews covers everything you need to know about diet and all the rest to look great.
For the few who are open to this idea, a gym with barbells, round plates for deadlifts, and squat racks is what you’re looking for. National chains are not a good choice. For travel consultants, there are online coaches available that are cheaper than personal trainers and you can do workouts both at home and on the road on your own schedule. I use Barbell Logic and have been extremely happy with them.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, not only you will get in great shape you will also learn how to defend yourself against bigger opponents
WTF is toning?
Classpass gets you a variety, but also barre or pilates are good for toning
I’ve never had an issue with it and I live in a pretty popular city for it 🤷♀️ they have a two week free trial if you want to just see for yourself!
Also, I’m not a fan of orange theory personally but I know friends who swear by it. At the end of the day, it’s more important I find something I enjoy that I know going to, not something I dread
Solidcore
YMCA is a pretty sweet deal (some gyms offer free classes as well). It’s a national membership and there are gyms everywhere
*misty = mostly
I have Equinox national pass and love it as it has a range of everything
NEOU....on line, all the time...live classes daily (not always perfect timing), large variety. YouTube has crap but I like this better.
I've been doing orange theory, it's been everywhere I've had a client so far
Barry’s will kick yo ass
