Biglaw -> VC firm

Looking for insight from anyone who’s made the jump from their biglaw firm to venture capital / private equity. How was the interview process coming from law to a quant-heavy analyst role? Anything you did to prepare? What was your greatest strength to focus on as a law grad?

Thanks!

I was an analyst for a VC firm before going to law school and now am a biglaw corporate associate, so not exactly what you are looking for but I still keep in touch with my old firm and have a lot of friends/former colleagues in VC and PE.

I think people have the misconception that VC as quant heavy. My experience was working with much more qualitative data - market research, customer calls, attending pitch contests, etc. Honestly, similar skills to typical jr associate due dilegence, but instead you are looking at product market fit, competitors , etc. There is some modeling but very simple, nothing you can’t learn. As you move up it’s all about relationships.

I met a few lawyers who worked in the VC/startup space and thought what they did was cool so I went to law school. I’ve tried to keep the door open in case I want to jump back in.

If you are serious about VC, start networking with people in the field. I think you could sell your research ability and ability to work with ambiguity, which is all early stage investing is.

Not exactly what you are looking for but happy to answer any questions.

OP - what’s your background? Honestly, the excel isn’t too difficult and someone who was smart enough to make it to big law can figure it out. I get a lot of recruiter emails to PE shops. Don’t know how legit they are but if you also get them, reach out.

Curious too — this is my dream career pivot

VC space seems like a terrible place to exit to right now given interest rate increases. May see a gutting of the sector imo.

Anyone else here realized they have some alcohol moderation issues? I graduated college within the past 1.5 yrs and my friends are still in the heavy weekend drinking phase. I only drink about 2 times a week, but it’s the volume of drinks that’s the issue. I’m not ready to quit - just cut down a lot! Tips/advice appreciated! TIA :)

I’ve been practicing in both big law (many yrs ago) and now in-house for over 10 years. Quite often I struggle because I don’t find work fulfilling. I’ve been in industries that allegedly have greater cause (healthcare) but was eventually disappointed by the corporate bureaucracy and went to a cutting-edge tech company for intellectual stimulation. Still I struggle. Should I try public interest? Not that I don’t need the money but it’s hard to work when I am so detached and find it meaningless

Has anyone made the transition from non-profit and small firm practice to federal government, big law, in-house? The job market has been really competitive but I am getting closer to getting a new job and moving on. The firm culture isn't great and work-life balance is non existent. My physical and mental health have been suffering, so I really don't think I could stay. How did you avoid the guilt trips from Partners/Senior staff trying to get you to stay?
