Group and office matters quite a bit, but generally Sidley is a much better positioned firm

Willingness to put that in writing
Senior associate at MB. Agree it depends on the group as there’s been some turmoil within some here which could be good for giving you an opportunity I guess, but bad if you’re depending on it being some certain type of way here. I do hear that counsel here can be lucrative but I think Sidley will pay more. Will you be in a major city office? Do you mind sharing which class year? I’m curious what’s viewed as “senior” nowadays.
I think I would go Sidley based on higher ranking and likely slightly higher comp?

As a general matter Sidley is a much stronger firm, but I think group will matter a lot here.

If you do not bill 2,000 hours at MB you will not be promoted to the next level, so get your promotion in writing. Otherwise, I like MB. It's intense and FT is real in a lot of groups but things seem to function pretty well.
If it’s not Debt Finance; choose Sidley.

Go look at the Chamber's rankings. Both sides of the CapM practice are ranked the same. Securitization and structured products are ranked higher.
What group? It entirely depends on that.
Which group in MB? My previous group there had a track record of making offers like this and not honoring the promotion element unless the candidate got a competing offer. I would also look at see how long the existing senior associates and NEPs have been in the group. If only 1 or 2 have been there longer than 4/5 years (ie there is no one homegrown) ask yourself why that might be.
Counsel can be very different from firm to firm. Sidley expects counsel to bill like associates and grind. If they don’t, they can easily be fired. A bunch were stealthed the last couple years.
What did you ultimately do?
