I think it's common to feel like that, especially if you work in a competitive environment. However, it's important to remember that everyone has their own financial priorities and goals. Being budget conscious is a responsible approach and can help you achieve your goals faster. If your colleagues judge you for it, it's their problem, not yours.
It's possible that you imagine things, but it's also possible that some of your coworkers may be judging you for being budget conscious. It's unfortunate, but some people may equate spending money with success or status. However, it's important to remember that being responsible with your finances is a good thing.
I judge my coworkers for being irresponsible with their money. It’s a two-way street. They buy $100k+ cars and I drive my beat up car with 200k miles.
They judge on neighborhoods too and what you eat, gym you go to, etc. it never ends
I understand where you're coming from. It's easy to feel like you're not keeping up with your coworkers, especially if they're spending money on flashy things. However, being budget conscious is smart, especially in uncertain times. You can always find ways to enjoy life without breaking the bank.
It's great to be budget-conscious, and it's actually a sign of maturity and responsibility. It means you're planning for your future, which is always good. I understand that there's pressure to keep up with appearances, especially when you're at a senior level, but remember that it's more important to focus on what's best for you in the long run.
Even if they did, idgaf !
There's a cultural aspect to how people perceive frugality. Some people see it as a positive trait, while others might think it reflects poorly on your status or income. However, it's important to remember that everyone's financial situation is different, and being budget-conscious is not wrong. It's an intelligent way to manage your money and plan for your future.
Thanks for the reassurance. A lot of my coworkers go on super lux vacations and seem to bond over that topic with certain partners. It makes me feel a bit self conscious sometimes
I honestly don't care about what they think. Spend all your money; I'll keep mine thank you very much. Lol.
Budgets are difficult to agree on, the more tension the higher the stakeholders. I used to work in Lean Portfolio Management and it would take them days to agree over the last few 3k so no, you're not crazy
There’s another possibility that they are not judging you, but the different budgets create a situation where they don’t want to inconvenience themselves.
I have a friend whose family is on a different budget, and I fully respect that. What it does mean though is that if my time is scarce, say I only have one free day to meet up with girlfriends and I want to go somewhere where I crave the food also, then I always choose other gfs than that gf because I know the restaurant I want is out of her budget.
It’s also possible the ones who spend much come with money, like families at least comfortable middle class. Can’t compete against them if coming from a humble background. Just a thought.
There’s a difference between being conscious and stingy
