Does your manager support the DEI initiatives you lead? Sometimes I feel like my manager is just giving me lip service. I don't think he really wants to see me succeed

I feel the same way. I tried to start a women's group at my company and they were "supportive" of it until we started discussing pay, childcare, etc. Then it became a problem.

like

It’s unfortunate this happened and I’m really sorry. You deserve more support than this, and it’s unfortunate that they only wanted the visual of a women’s group, and not the potential high impact outcomes of a women’s group.

I’ve totally felt this before with different programs that I’ve put on. Sometimes it feels like they are just giving us busy work to do and they don’t actually care about outcomes.

Does anyone have any advice on how to navigate a male dominated work space. Just need to pointers to calm me down — I’m about to start a new role in an Investment Bank doing equity research. I’ve met with my team and they all seem very nice but still feeling very anxious about it as there are barely any women in the firm (about 80%-20% split).

Just had an interview with the CEO of this brand (it was my 4th interview for this role). For some reason, I got really nervous and I think it got the best of me. I felt like I rambled and sounded really stupid a few times because I couldn't find my words... I don't usually get this nervous so IDK why that happened. Do I address any of that in the follow-up email or would that just make it worse? Any thoughts on how to help address it or make it better via a follow up email?

Had a coffee chat with a director of PM at a tech company I’m interested in. Would it be tactless to ask him for a referral to strategy and project manager roles within the company? I know we're a lax industry in terms of social norms, but some of our younger employees don't seem to get the basics of acknowledging seniority. They'll make inappropriate jokes and question their assignments. Am I just outdated or should I discipline them?

I have a face to face interview tomorrow and was wondering what the thoughts were wearing a nice knitted sweater instead of a blazer for an interview. My blazers don’t quite fit anymore and it’s not in my budget to buy a new blazer. I have one in mind that’s a turtleneck and can be styled with dress pants nicely. Either that or a cardigan….

On a big zoom call this morning. Child walks in fully naked and COVERED in marker. I mean face, legs, hands, everything. Even better, I didn't hear them right away and a coworker had to let me know they were there via chat. Turned around and my kid looked like a soldier in army paint. Not my finest parenting moment since I just pushed them out into the hallway and continued with my meeting. Sharing the shame here

I interviewed someone and they were clearly sexist. All the other interviewers - all men - liked him a lot. I’m saying no to him and trying to articulate why. Please help? What do I say? The role he would come in for would need to support me and my team- among others. I don’t want to be the difficult person here, but he would clearly not be a good fit and I get the feeling he would not be a good partner to me.

I'm thinking of freelancing while on maternity leave. It's not in violation of my contract with my full time employer but would you tell your manager and HR?

Is it just me, or is it common for former union bosses who go into corporate management to have an inherent inclination try to treat their employees the same way they would treat their employer in their previous role? Anyone else have a similar experience?

I'm starting to feel more and more like the instructions I'm getting and what the target market will actually respond to aren't matching up. I'm new to this company and they talked a lot about wanting a fresh perspective etc, but that isn't reflected in their feedback in any way. Beginning to get frustrated and I feel like it's undermining my position as well.

How do you usually ask for PTO? I have the days accrued but I have PTSD from a past job about asking for time off. I’m wanting to take 5 days in June for a family trip and know I need to put in the request to the partners I work for sooner rather than later. I had to take a day this last week and they were great about it (immediate “Yeses”) but somehow, asking for a week feels like a hurdle. (Also, I’m only 7 months in, haven’t met the partners IRL, and we only really communicate via email)

I'm in desperate need of tips to get genuine buy in from our predominantly white, male senior leadership to create a more inclusive environment. Definitely took the wrong job. I was offered a seriously competitive salary and great benefits to work at a well funded startup, which is great!
