My burnout got worse after kids. I felt like I was running out of steam and couldn’t do Biglaw anymore. I began taking recruiters’ calls and decided to pursue an in house opportunity, which I landed. Four years later, I haven’t looked back. I still feel burned out, but the in-house environment, at least in my role, is much more humane, and it’s easier to coast for a day or two here and there. I’m able to get more normal sleep because my schedule and workload is more manageable. Each in-house role is unique so that is not everyone’s experience, unfortunately.
Take a day off during the week. Drop the kids at school or daycare, arrange with work ahead of time to be out/unreachable for the day. Put your OOO on. And do whatever you want—sleep, watch tv, go to a museum, work out—whatever makes you feel good.
You probably need a lot more time off than one day. That’s nearly impossible as a parent to small children. I understand. But you’ve taken so little time for yourself that a whole day will feel indulgent.
In fact, you are probably thinking that you can’t possibly take a day off. But everyone will be ok without you for 1 day.
I'm so, so sorry you're going through this and I hope you can get the support you deserve
As a fellow mama I can relate, but you have little ones and I have to say that is challenging. Do you have help? Is dad in the picture? Can he take some of the load off? Please, I urge you to outsource and seek help. A friend, family member, or a paid service maybe from care dot com? Sometimes you need to put yourself first. You’ve been putting everything else before You - your kids, your work. And I know that’s non-negotiable, but still… you must carve out time for yourself. Easier said than done. But you have to. Hang in there 🥺

I think many people can benefit from therapy, but if you’re ND you need a specialist. What works for NT doesn’t necessarily work for us, and the specialist can give you useful lifehacks that leverage your ADHD.
Feeling the same way right now about therapy just being another inconvenience.
