Yup! Both professionally and personally. It’s usually when I challenge people who has a higher title than me or who think they’re above me for whatever reason I’ll never understand. I find it comical it’s also usually ALWAYS the ones who advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion. They can’t handle that they’re also part of the problem.
😆…a million times yes! I once got reported for making a coworker uncomfortable because my height intimidated her. A man once told another supervisor that my body made him uncomfortable because he was attracted to me. A third said my obvious intelligence made her feel insecure. Being a Black woman is extremely exhausting in the workplace - and having an informed opinion to go with it?! 🥴
Thank you to you both for sharing these examples. They are outrageous and I’m so sorry you both experienced them.
Both professionally and not. It’s how we talk. We don’t whitewash ourselves enough and others often feel uncomfortable. I’m full Hispanic and I live in military housing and I still get the “abrasive” shit. They don’t find me abrasive until they find out that I’m not white though so I always laugh.
Yes, a few times. I've been told I'm too direct and need to soften my language in emails (didn't do enough fake niceties)
I've been told that, too. So now I write my email per my normal way. However, before I send, I ensure there's a sentence at the start that expresses concern or interest. I also ensure my signoff is nice as well - but not a thank-you because I was told saying thanks can be passive-aggressive?!?
Then I spell check, dumb down language to be at or under 6th grade reading level, then send. Or just as likely, fret about what I am missing that could be misconstrued, and sleep on it, and send the next day.
Sighs.
Yes, usually when I stand my ground and try to sort someone out. I don't like to be micro-managed, patronized or condescended to and have no qualms about advising certain entitled types that they need to dial it back a notch. That has a way of being labeled aggressive, because people see my soft brown eyes in my big brown face and expect me to be soft-spoken and demure.
Can we say microaggresions?
Oh yes - and intimidating. Several times, though pre-diversity training, called the B-word by male leaders.
I actually have the opposite problem. People treat me as unintelligent or precious.
Yes absolutely- more so outside of work. At work i am a little more tactful.
Oh yes, all the time. It frustrates me when I try not to come across that way, and people still say things like that. Then they'll say, "Maybe it's because you're from the north..." Oh yeah, cool, that's probably it.
Yes. Unfortunately I was abrasive. I do my best to find my patience and tact.
I really don't get the US culture of politeness. It's all fake and causes things 10x longer to get communicated. I speak what's on my mind and I'm direct when things need to get done and then somehow I'm the a$$hole?
That’s coded language
Have I? Anytime you call someone out for a microaggression, you are being sensitive or taking things out of proportion
Micro aggressions are hard to define. There's a lot of passive aggressiveness in corporate culture and "per my last email" behavior that hr sees as acceptable. If I tried to call this out on a regular basis I'd be exhausted.
