You can go over on both a little bit. Some people say going over on protein kicks you out of ketosis, but if we are talking 10-20 over, you will probably be fine. The goal is to stay in the macros and %ages, but as you go, you can play with it a bit and see what works for you because everyone is different. I have found that I can reduce my fat some, eat a little more protein, and as long as my carbs are low, I stay in ketosis. A good friend of mine can eat up to 50 carbs and manage to stay in ketosis (which knocks me out of it), but if her fat and protein are out of whack, then she gets kicked out. The saying in a lot of Keto circles is that for macros, carbs are a limit (always stay under), protein is a goal (you want to try to hit this everyday), and fat is a lever to keep you full (you can adjust based on your hunger level).
Some others in this group will tell you that you have to hit your full amount of fat, but that is not true for everyone. As I said, play around with it and see what works for you.
If you are consistently going over your fat and protein macros, you may find yourself losing weight more slowly as it will be over your calorie target. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but if weight loss is a goal, it is something to think about. I actually prefer a slower weight loss, so I am not too concerned if I go over sometimes.
Also, if you lift weights or exercise a good amount, you actually need more protein (and fat and calories), to make sure you aren’t losing muscle.
Thanks IBM1 - that is incredibly helpful
Don’t go over on protein if anything. Doing so kicks you out of keto. Over on fat is ok, but not by exorbitant amount. Try to stick close to what calc says but don’t stress if it’s not exact
Fat is definitely a lever, if your goal is loss, stick to lower amounts of consumed fat so your body can fuel off of your body fat - but within reason. You shouldn’t feel famished. Listen to your body, drink water, get adequate sodium/potassium, and ask yourself if you’re really hungry or habit/emotionally eating
