How do I handle another associate taking all of my billable work? I am relatively new to the firm, so I have very few cases of my own at the moment. I struggle to get hours. The other associate has many more cases of their own. However, every time we get new documents, assignments, etc on my few cases, the other associate rushes and bills for it. At the end of the month, I have so few hours that I feel useless to the firm.

Are you sure you can’t also bill to review things? Typically all attorneys on a case need to be at least familiar with key documents. Have you been specifically told you can’t both review and bill? If not, I would just bill the time and wait for someone to tell me otherwise.

like

You still must have a conversation. Or still review and bill it and it let the partner write it off.

like

Are you being specifically tasked with an assignment and the other associate rushes to do it? If so, you have to have a conversation. Confrontation sucks but no one is going to stand up for you but yoi?

like

Why aren’t you coordinating with them on division of labor? It should never be about who happens to bill for something first….

like

Because I have so few cases, I have nothing to delegate. If I delegate “x” assignment while waiting for “y” assignment, I may be twiddling my thumbs for 3-4 days waiting for something new to come.

It’s not always specifically tasked. When we get a new case, it’s “our case.” We work it up from the Answer to the verdict.

When we get anything new in, the associate will rush to review it and bill. I’m not slacking either. I’m talking about we get the documents in our system at 9:30 a.m., and there is an entry in our billing software by 11:30 a.m. the same day.

When it’s time for me to write motions, go to hearings, depositions, etc., I’m having to skip out on the billable hours I could get for reviewing the docs because they’ve already been billed by said associate.

Is it possible to bill those hours all the same, then when it comes time to discuss at your performance review why you’re double-billing over the other associates, you’ll be in the very advantageous position of pointing to actual work product generated based on your review time while the other associates get caught with nothing to show for their “review.”

I posted this somewhere else before I remembered that I am in this bowl :) so, I changed jobs 6-7 months ago and I am realizing it is not a good fit. Leadership seem to not want to hear the truth so people tell them what they want to hear and if you don’t middle management gets pissed at you. I am seriously thinking about looking somewhere else. My question is how do you answer the “why are you looking to leave” question without bad mouthing your current company?

Is Federal/Public Sector consulting fulfilling work? I'm at a tier 2 consulting firm right now focused on retail clients, and I just feel like there is zero point to this work. Its all about increasing sales of a product that people could easily live without. As an Associate, I just move boxes around on PPT slides all day. Looking for better WLB and fulfillment in my work, thinking that might be Public Sector work.
