How do you find out if you have a mental issue, or you just suck at certain things? I’m apprehensive of seeing a therapist - maybe just an innate mistrust of people who have everything to benefit by convincing me I have a problem.

TL;DR You can only be diagnosed with a mental illness by a licensed therapist or practitioner, just like a physical illness. Some home remedies may work on some symptoms, but not always. If you’re questioning your state of mind, it’s probably a good sign to look into a therapist that fits your comfort level and goals.

Therapy usually works best for those open minded enough to understand they could benefit from it. That being said, I’m of the belief that nearly everyone would benefit from therapy (under those conditions). Consider that you may benefit from it. Next, address the mistrust. Is it really plausible that the entire network of mental health professionals across the nation is actually a big front just to get people to utilize health insurance, be on prescription meds, etc? More than likely, no, it’s not plausible. So what then is the more likely truth? That it’s a system of developed professionals out to solve problems. Doctors have a lot to benefit from by claiming you’re sick. Mechanics have plenty to gain by slightly tweaking things during repairs so you’re back in 6 weeks. Dentists callus gain a lot by providing cleaning agents that leave teeth prone to staining more than usual. All service industry professionals have something to gain by not ~completely~ doing their job, but we always trust that they will. Because that’s the healthy and logical train of thought. We pay for a service, it gets completed to the best of the providers ability. The way we trust in that process, we should also trust that mental health professionals have our best interest and our health as their priority. Hopefully this long winded response offers a bit of insight into therapy, I’m kind of pulling from my experience in having Cognitive - Behavioral Therapy for anxiety where thoughts are rational and logical or irrational and emotional, and behaviors are aligned more to the logical and rational thought patterns until it all becomes first nature.

Take your time with therapists and make sure you find one you can be comfortable with. It makes the process much easier. I hope you find your way through whatever your obstacle is, good luck!

I’ve had a therapist tell me she wouldn’t continue to work with me because she didn’t think she could help me (I was super resistant to her suggestions etc) so most will not want to work with you unless they think you need it. And most of us can benefit from it

Having access to clean and abundant water to shower everyday is a privilege. Growing up in LA, during the drought period, forced many of us (especially those from a low socioeconomic background) to cut down on our showers. Our water bills were $600/mo (and my family was on food stamps at the time, we showered 3x a week). We simply couldn’t afford to shower everyday. Throwing a different perspective out there for all my east coast friends who grew up with access to unlimited, cheap (free) water

Hi all,

Need some advice on my next career move. I'm 31, have an MBA and am currently a SC in Risk Advisory with no M&A experience. I am good at risk consulting work but don't find it very challenging or interesting. That said, I expect to get promoted to M next year.

Recently, I interviewed with another Big 4 firm for SC in CDD M&A team and have got an offer. I enjoyed doing the CDD case study, and I believe I'd do well in the role.

Does it make sense to start afresh in M&A at this stage?

I'm really struggling. My company just furloughed some staff and I'm beating myself up about it. I keep thinking maybe there was something I could have done better to get the right kind of leads or maybe I made the wrong call on a pitch that could have brought in enough business to save people's jobs. Anyone else have these feelings? I know its survivor's guilt, but I feel like I've let my coworkers and their families down.

There are days like this when I deeply regret having chosen advertising as a career. I had the opportunity to study other careers that offer more stability in the long run and probably a better sense of purpose, but instead decided to go with something that seemed “fun and exciting”. Very immature choice. I wish somebody had warned me. If you are young, it’s not too late to change careers and do something else.
