TL;DR You can only be diagnosed with a mental illness by a licensed therapist or practitioner, just like a physical illness. Some home remedies may work on some symptoms, but not always. If you’re questioning your state of mind, it’s probably a good sign to look into a therapist that fits your comfort level and goals.
Therapy usually works best for those open minded enough to understand they could benefit from it. That being said, I’m of the belief that nearly everyone would benefit from therapy (under those conditions). Consider that you may benefit from it. Next, address the mistrust. Is it really plausible that the entire network of mental health professionals across the nation is actually a big front just to get people to utilize health insurance, be on prescription meds, etc? More than likely, no, it’s not plausible. So what then is the more likely truth? That it’s a system of developed professionals out to solve problems. Doctors have a lot to benefit from by claiming you’re sick. Mechanics have plenty to gain by slightly tweaking things during repairs so you’re back in 6 weeks. Dentists callus gain a lot by providing cleaning agents that leave teeth prone to staining more than usual. All service industry professionals have something to gain by not ~completely~ doing their job, but we always trust that they will. Because that’s the healthy and logical train of thought. We pay for a service, it gets completed to the best of the providers ability. The way we trust in that process, we should also trust that mental health professionals have our best interest and our health as their priority. Hopefully this long winded response offers a bit of insight into therapy, I’m kind of pulling from my experience in having Cognitive - Behavioral Therapy for anxiety where thoughts are rational and logical or irrational and emotional, and behaviors are aligned more to the logical and rational thought patterns until it all becomes first nature.
Take your time with therapists and make sure you find one you can be comfortable with. It makes the process much easier. I hope you find your way through whatever your obstacle is, good luck!
I’ve had a therapist tell me she wouldn’t continue to work with me because she didn’t think she could help me (I was super resistant to her suggestions etc) so most will not want to work with you unless they think you need it. And most of us can benefit from it
