I have never had this experience. I’ve been at 4 firms- the only time someone has commented on my hours is maybe after month end or during review. If someone was looking every day I’d look elsewhere esp in litigation where I have days that are 10+ other days are going to be lower.
What AA1 said. It’s crazy that a partner is looking at your hours on a daily basis (and even crazier that he has the time to do so).
finance could also be flagging things for partners if hours are generally low at the firm? In which case it wouldn’t be just about you…
You shouldn’t be afraid of “over sharing” in that instance, if your concern is sounding like you are making excuses. It’s ok to humanize yourself. That said, if it’s literally one day, hopefully the people actually in charge of your review are rational. So long as you are making your yearly metrics, they shouldn’t care if you take a whole month off.
That this partner is so petty as to bring up a single day of billables though is the larger issue. I’d try and avoid them, or if you cannot, raise it with a mentor you trust who can help advise how to insulate yourself for reviews. Though at least at my firm, the very few people who would do that are known quantities, and their comments are weighed as such.
