You guys can try taking a break from alcohol for a month or 3 months. If it's super easy you're probably fine if it's a real struggle you might have a problem. Happy to DM if you want to talk more 🙂

There are typically a few signs or behaviors that can suggest there is a problem. The term “alcoholic” though, is tricky. An “alcoholic” is someone who has “alcoholism”, but the symptoms of alcoholism are not as concrete as most other diseases out there, that is, until the alcoholism has progressed to a significant degree. (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcoholism)
And the progression is what’s so dangerous. Like others have said, what starts as an innocent stress reliever/social lubricant/celebration symbol can slowly creep into an unhealthy place, and the further it goes, the greater the denial about it becomes.
When I could no longer answer these questions with an honest “no”, then I knew I was screwed:
- Can I always stop when I want to?
- The last time I got in trouble, was I sober?
- Is alcohol adding to my life?
If you’re concerned about your drinking, try to take a break for a few weeks. See what happens. Is it no big deal? Do you not even think about it, or is every evening a struggle to not pop open that bottle of wine? Do you find yourself getting agitated more easily after a few days without drinking?
Switch to herbal teas or nonalcoholic mocktails for a period of time.

For me, I wasn't going to reach out for help until I tried to quit and couldn't .
This is how it starts. Habitual drinking becomes addiction and a low key alcoholic is still an alcoholic. Sooner or later the bottle shares becomes 1.2,1.4, 1.6 bottles (glass = 0.2). because it’s ok if we open another to have a little more as long as we don’t finish it. Maybe we get started a little earlier because it’s nice to have a glass (or two) while cooking a meal, and then during the meal, not after to begin with but maybe over time another glass in front of the TV.
