I am a POC woman who started at a U.S. firm in a completely new practice area. I had an initial mixed review because I was new and just learning and just had a talk before my mid year review where I was told I had improved but they were also being nitpicky about tiny things. One partner said she was unhappy with me because I owed her work but I literally went through my emails and cannot find what she is talking about. How should I deal?

I second this. I was in this position - was told I’d been making mistakes at my review but failed to tell me my mistakes as I made them so had no idea what they were talking about. Had I been told I would have had a chance to learn from and fix my mistakes. Also - is there another POC associate she’s confusing you with? I wouldn’t be surprised….

A review should not be the first time you learn if an issue with your work. It’s essentially documentation for them to get rid of people without repercussions. Document your communication and update your resume with established successes and get out before they push you out.
I don’t have a place to speak to whether you’re experiencing discrimination, but trust your instincts.

If you are unsure about what work you owe to a particular partner or if you feel like you need more guidance, take initiative and reach out to them proactively. Ask for more specific instructions or request a meeting to go over the work in question

I did apparently it was work I had already handed in within the artificial deadline but on the last day of said artificial deadline so she was being pissy about it.

Is there a corporate way to bring up to senior leaders that an IC is causing issues across multiple teams because they are demanding and also doesn’t collaborate well? Much to reflect on with this topic. Last week I was told in a 1:1 with a new contact that I was “too direct”. After some time chewing on the conversation I was struggling to place the emotions I was feeling. Turns out I was feeling guilty and shame for being me, for taking up space. Lesson of the week: unsolicited advice is a criticism of you, a micro aggression of who you are, and being “too much”. What would you do??

A coworker asked me to do something, I should have questioned it but did it because I trusted their seniority. I got called out for it by our boss on an email. Should I say something? I am planning to apologize to my boss and mention I’ll run it by them next time. But not sure if I should mention I had checked with my coworker who was in charge of that area.

So my junior lies a lot. About everything. They work hard and are reasonably smart, but they would swear a black pen is red and vice versa. When you catch them out, they keep digging. A company didn’t follow through with a scheduled intro phone call. I emailed during the time scheduled to see if something had come up & after as well to reschedule. No one answered me or followed up. I can’t help but feel like this is a little red flag. If you can’t follow though on an intro call… what’s your HR & the rest of the company doing? 😬

Preparing to give notice to my current firm. Accepted an amazing opportunity to lateral at a more prestigious firm (better compensation, lower billables, and shorter commute).
I’m excited to make this jump, but it’s still bittersweet for me because the partners at my current firm are truly amazing and I have learned a lot from them over the past few years and will miss them a lot. Any insight on the best way to have this convo without burning bridges? Thanks!

I'm a younger plaintiff's side attorney (31). Does anyone else feel like white attorneys give you a particularly harder time? Like unreasonably denying clear facts, or trying to fish for a way to sanction you? Usually it's solo defense attorneys that get extreme with it, but I've seen some questionable stuff from BigLaw too. Hopefully I'm not the only one.
