I get so angry at myself sometimes when I fall behind on tasks. I'm sitting here with two days worth of work because I just couldn't get anything done yesterday. How do you show yourself grace and kindness when you just want to scream at yourself?

My therapist says she talks to a lot of people, and see that everyone is doing their best. Some days or even days at a time or even weeks at time, you’re not going to be at your highest “productivity” levels, but you are probably always doing your best. Your capacity just changes because you’re human. Tell yourself “I’m doing my best, and that’s enough. Today my best looks like …”

like

I think this is great advice. I personally tried as hard as I could to stop with any negative self talk about productivity. Some days I clear my entire to do list at lightning speed - other days I can’t even sit at my computer for an hour straight. While I work on having more control over which days are which I just try to maximize the productive days and be kind to myself on the rest and do what I can. As long as I feel like I tried to do what I could then I am at peace with what actually gets done. Your personal sense of urgency and innate skill will help you make sure you don’t miss anything truly important, and the truth is, most of your work probably isn’t that urgent as long as it gets done eventually and well. It is highly unlikely that anyone will be harmed if you take extra time to get some or even most lesser tasks done. If you’re someone who shows up and gets it done when it counts and otherwise is a good teammate you’ll have good trust established with colleagues and the amount of slack they cut you will probably surprise you.

like

Just get in there and start working. Hopefully the fact that it is backed up has your urgency system on high alert and you can bang out a bunch of work. Remember, your super powers mean when you are in a hyper focus space you are more efficient that most humans.

Get in the zone and get going. You can do it.

like

Sometimes we can’t get in the zone, no? Sometimes I can’t activate my hyper focus. And I’ve personally chosen not to use Adrenalin as my productivity coach. It’s too taxing.

like

Go easy on yourself. It happens to the best of us. Just try to pace yourself and work through what needs to be done. When I get like this, I find it helps to write down all my tasks and prioritize them. Then, I work through each one and cross them out as I complete them. And understand that you may not get everything done. That's ok. You're human. Just do your best.

like

We all go through this. Don't be so harsh on yourself. Just take one day at a time. Pick up where you left off. I like to make lists sometimes to help me prioritize what needs to be done first so I can tackle those things first.

like

Lists help me a ton too 🙂

I went through this all of last week. I had no idea how I would get caught up. And then I just sat myself down and set a goal to at least do 1 hour of work. Once I start with one, small, achievable goal it helps get the ball rolling. I had to work late nights all week, but I got my work done and did a pretty good job if I do say so myself.

likesmart

When I have low motivation days, I do small tasks that take little effort. Sometimes this gets me going and allows me to tackle more difficult tasks. Sometimes it doesn’t, and I just do bullshit easy things all day that aren’t even time sensitive at all. But hey, I’m still billing.

likesmart

I am strict with my tasks and schedules. But there are days when I really can't function properly. Whenever that happens, I don't force myself. I take that time and use it to do some positive self-talk instead.

I’ll admit upfront Im a little woo woo, and for a lawyer that means im a lot woo woo. I’ve come to the conclusion that if I really can’t get myself to do something, where it becomes chronic, it may not be the right direction in my life or career. I go where it’s warm. That said, I still have to do my own laundry, which just feels wrong at a soul level

like

True! But will they do a decent job? I used to send out my laundry, before I moved to the burbs. But they would essentially boil my clothes, gradually ruining them. I’d love to know there are competent people who also provide the servcie

Forgive yourself for the things you have little to no control over. Don't beat yourself up for it. Remember that giving yourself space to reset and regroup is also classified as being productive. Make a list of all the things you need to get done and start with the one you think is easiest to get a hold of.

like

I have the same problem. I don't beat myself up anymroe but I just keep putting one foot in front of the other. The best thing we can do is keep moving forward. Beating yoruself up is just a waste of time.
