I just started a new role and it’s a year after my team had 2 teams merged together. We also got a new CEO and higher up division leader immediately when I started. There’s a lot of clunky processes and ambiguities as a result. How should one navigate this as a new employee?
I have found 2 people who I click with well AND who are honest in explaining the history, so I’m leaning on them just to understand the past to inform the future. I’m unbiased in all the re-org matters, but empathetic also.

One of my friends once gave me this piece of advice once that was genius and it was to make something at work my problem. If the processes are clunky then I would be looking at what I could do to improve them and make it better for everyone.

I am doing just that, but right now they don’t want me focused on that. That is what I’d like to do to get an immediate quick win

Well if you’re unclear on your role and what is expected of you I would start there and not stop asking until it’s clear, then move to whatever the current focus is in your overall company, tie what you’re expected to provide to that make sure everyone knows what you’re working on and measure your results. Lastly and only lastly because you don’t even know what’s expected of you otherwise I would put this first … you have to bring your team along every step of the way, this is not always popular depending on what your uppers think of it but if you don’t have the team ready to buy in you’re going to lost each and every time. Be fair and for goodness sakes be consistent treat them almost the same … Your bosses with change and move and along with them goes whatever your worried about today, and it’s replaced with the new bosses threshold and focus so stay grounded to your team stay dedicated to the processes you know add value that you can measure and bring your team with you and that’s the recipe for surviving the mess of senior leaders rotating door . If you want to be taken seriously be consistent everyday with everyone every single time

Note: my role got ‘downgraded’ from the person I’m filling in for. There are a lot of weird things I’m trying to navigate org wise in addition to getting the role down. It’s fine, but a lot of people are not transparent

Am I particularly uptight, or is writing meant to be done alone, without a partner talking to you? With past partners, we chat through script notes and then I go off to execute. Current partner likes to sit and chat as I write. To me, writing is crafting a conversation. So I can’t talk to you and simultaneously talk to this audience. Of course I can just say “I’m gonna go write.” But since we’re both CD level, I’m like…is this his first rodeo? Maybe other writers are different though.

Maybe it's because I'm in tax, but I've never dealt with these unreasonable Partners people speak of. I've never been told I can't go on vacation, or I've never been yelled at for not being in the office long enough. I've also never been iced out because of one mistake here or there.

During my first year, I struggled, and the partners I worked with went out of their way to take their time with me to help me learn, as did some of the senior-level Associates.

What does it mean if you get feedback such as “know the room better?” I came across a team email that was addressed to my account team, and I approached my boss about my response to it. Then he gave me this feedback and told me not to engage in the conversation. Funny thing is a strategy lead just responded back to the team with the exact response I came up with, and my boss agreed with her...

Working for a senior who is beyond horrible. She talks to you like you’re stupid and makes it sound like you’re absolutely terrible at what you’re doing. She’s made 5 other associates cry during her 5 year career. Got someone fired and made another person quit. It’s known around the office that she can no longer have a female associate, because she talks down to females more than she does males. I came along and thought I could deal with it but she literally makes me want to not log on tomorrow.

Hi everyone!

After years of hard work, I just got my first position in a leadership role! Yay! I’ll be leading a team of 12.
I wanted to know if you had any tips for me, things you wish you knew before, or things previous leaders did for/to you that you found admirable or stayed with you. I want to make sure I’m there for them and want to be a leader they will remember positively.

Thank you so much!!

"Everybody can be a leader" some say... "Leaders are nurtured not born" say others... True.

But... this is also true: "not everybody wants to be a leader" (whether they can or can't be). It is a fairly common practice in organizations with traditional career management structures for people to "be promoted" into leadership roles as the "end steps of the corporate ladder" that was climbed doing technical work. And, unfortunately, this doesn't work all the time

Now they have taken credit for the project I’ve been building over the past year+ without giving me props whatsoever to higher ups. What is the best plan of action here?
