I’m honestly so embarrassed at myself. I have all these things I said I would do — clubs I’d create, impact I’d have, startups I’d create — but I have nothing of impact to show for it. I just have all these great ideas, always starting something new but never actually executing on it successfully. I want to have the success my peers have but ADHD makes everything at least 10x harder, plus I feel like I’m getting dumber every day which doesn’t help. I’m just not sure what to do

A gift we have with ADHD is our flight of ideas and bursts of creative energy to launch projects.
Once we have a plan in place, the adhd brain no longer gets dopamine from it, and wants to move on to the next thing

It’s ok to shelve ideas that you create but then lose interest , you can come back to it later. Consider it your library of good ideas - they’re not failures. I have several half written books, product specs, even investor pitches that I shelved. Once in a while I come back to one of them. Let go of the guilt and feel proud of the attempts.

One way to hold yourself accountable is make a strong commitment - no back doors. For example I bid a proposal for a state job to do a project I had in mind for years, but never followed through on - and they hired me. Now I’m on the hook for seeing it through. Also hiring someone or recruiting a partner to help you do a project is also a good way to make sure a project gets done.

Thank you!

Give yourself grace. Have more trust in yourself. Your peers that don't have adhd may seem to have it better but your mind works in ways their's doesn't

The main thing you need to ask yourself with all that you are feeling - What are you doing to do about it??

Are you going to continue moping about it year after year? Or you going to start something now?

With chatgpt and AI boom, what really is holding you back??

Adhd is only a limation because the white man said so...what if it's a superpower rather than a limitation? Have you considered changing your lens?

(P.S. this response is encouragement and pressure for you to take a step towards your vision)

like

RCI1 you mentioned meditation and visualization. Ive been trying to do this for the last year. I feel like I struggle with these things. My brain is so loud that it’s hard for me to visualize or meditate. I kinda feel it’s a lot harder for ADHD people to meditate.

Agreed with the other responses above…especially the listen to “I Am”…read that and asked Alexa to play it and BOOM! That song captures it!!!!
Advice: Don’t rear view mirror it. The past “should’ve, could’ve, would’ve”…let it go. You have the same opportunity in this exact moment, so capitalize on those ideas now, or create a new one. The only thing truly stopping you, will be YOU. I say this because I’m in the same situation, and I’ve found sharing my thoughts and ideas with others, limits me. Everyone around you, even your family and closest friends, will poke holes in “why” you shouldn’t peruse your ideas, and discourage you. That will definitely paralyze anyone. If you’re confident in yourself, and your ideas, GO FOR IT! This life is a playground, and ADHD, in my opinion, is our superpower and advantage. People pretend they want the best for someone…but do they? Take the risk, do you, and believe it will succeed! We control our destiny…and we’ll never have the success we know we can achieve, by thoughts alone. Life passes by…we can ride the wave, or sit comfortably on sand. It’s all perspective and personal choice.
I believe in you.
I believe in you.
I believe in you.
Now repeat outloud,
I believe in me.
I believe in me.
I believe in me.
And all the above self work from Recruitment Specialist 1.
YOU GOT THIS!!!🙌❤️

The only stopping me is me that’s the issue 😅 but thank you! Hopefully if you’re in the same situation you achieve all you desire to as well

All of the advice you’ve gotten so far is very kind. But allow me to take a different approach.

Have you been formally diagnosed?
Are you currently taking medication?
Do you work with a therapist or an ADHD coach (two different things, FYI)?

ADHD is a disability and that means there are supports you will likely need in order to achieve similar levels of functioning as someone whose brain functions “normally.”

It would be silly to suggest that someone with, e.g., diabetes solve their issues with positive thinking. The same goes for us. Seek out professional help, that’s what it’s for.

Don’t feel alone. I was having a bout of colleague comparison shame myself. And I think I’m way too old and experienced and talented to be feeling (whining) about insecurity. But we all have emotions, insecurities, and ups/downs. It doesn’t help me when people tell me I shouldn’t feel bad..or I should just “buck up” and get back to work (duh that’s the shame spiral I’m already deep into and you’re pushing me in deeper man!). It helps me more to know someone experiences the same sometimes. So let me tell you that I do feel the same. If I’m allowed to acknowledge the feeling with empathy (from myself or another), I’m perfectly able to get on with productive pursuits. It’s when someone argues with the validity of my experience that I get stuck in it. (Irony given the opposite intent)

Agree with giving yourself grace and also recommend getting organized with your ideas. Consistency is our Achilles heel even though creativity is our brilliance. Pick one idea and map out what it would take to implement start to finish, as well as how long it will take. You may love the vision or decide that it’s too much of a time sink. And then you can pivot from there.

I am 75 years old and working full-time remotely, and my ADHD has caused me to make mistakes and miss things. I've developed a simple Excel spreadsheet for my every day to do list, which has helped, and set up reference sheets for every type of document I process, which also helps. But just when I think I've covered everything, something new pops up. I also think I'm dealing with some age-related memory issues, so I'm hanging on, but not sure I will have this job too much longer. Which is a shame because I work for a wonderful company.
