McKinsey & Company Has any industry experienced candidates pivot to MBB Engagement Manager before? My roommate works at FAANG as Senior Analyst (Ops, 6+ YOE) and was approached by McKinsey & Company recruiter for an EM role. He hasn’t done consulting before. Would this be too much of a risk? His goal is to pivot to PE S&O eventually.

Full 401k match, 1/3 reimbursement for any class you want to take (I used it to learn Spanish and race driving), internet reimbursement for when you work at home, 15% bonus target that’s easily 30% for top performers, generous flight caps that result in mostly business travel, plenty of internal mobility, can bring your dog to work, free physical fitness classes
People being allowed to bring their dogs to work makes me not want to work there.
Well the biggest perk of being a federal employee, IBM1, is that you can basically sleep at your desk all day and show up looking slovenly and there’s very little anyone can do about it. I don’t think they offer that perk at even google.
Unfortunately Deloitte OP at my Federal place, I can’t sleep at my desk as I will be escorted out. I have deliverables and deadlines to meet. Yep I have some periods of downtime but not many on my contract but there are many who have said we work way too hard on my project so I will give you that. I will also say that the Deloitte people at this agency are pretty good too, overdressed, but good. :)
OP you work at Deloitte. Facebook offers more in ways of literally everything: Comp, Bonus, RSU, 401k, Perks, ADO, etc. If the work seems interesting I really don’t see anything you can turn your nose up to
usually means 1) survive more than 2 years and 2) move from individual contributor (how most begin, even senior people) to leader of people and grow your space
I’ll keep my product quiet for the sake of anonymity, but I work in Strategy & Operations
The maternity leave alone is a great benefit.
Literally the first time I’ve seen anyone from Google post here. Well done, look forward to your second post
So many people at FB and GOOG are very young, start early, get vested and then that’s it. A 401K is good if you’re older. Yes saving money early on means compounding is powerful and working in your favour. But a good stock option bonus plan can be very lucrative .
Getting a job at Facebook or Google is not much more difficult than getting one in consulting. Yet, they both provide much more to employees in general. That said, consulting firms offer much more than the average employer
I think all these benefits are yes very gimmicky; but at the same time, it cost a lot of money for the employer to offer these. It shows they invest in the employees and want to keep them long term, does it mean working extra long hours? Maybe, but it’s all about your time management skill too right?
OP, just to add a couple extra:
+50% increased comp compared to ACN Tier 1 Consultant level.
+Fly business class for international travel
+Free latest pixel or iPhone every year with phone bill paid for (unlimited data)
Someone share some solid cons of moving to FANG to balance this thread out.
Not as much travel = me paying for my own vacations.
I have a closet full of suits and a head full of knowledge on English tailoring that I never use.
Promo seems to be slower for most (though this has not been my experience)
Calls to regulate or break up consulting firms are quieter and less frequent
All the truly great Google jobs are in SF or NY so if those cities don’t work for you you could be limited to L6 ($300k/year)
Snacks make you fat
All of Google’s internal tools are custom built, so you learn the principles of these tools rather than specific transferable skills
G1, G2 how did you get into that position? At what level did you make the move
McKinsey & Company 2: Anyone who complains probably has never worked at a non-profit or small company where the perks are nonexistent.
As someone in a support role myself, I always get annoyed when I hear some admin or EMC ranting that their $60k+/year pay is paltry compared to that at other firms, especially if they don’t have the credentials to lead to more career mobility
What skill sets does one need to get lucrative offers at Facebook or Google? Is it primarily coding skills?
Also hopefully will never need it but
- 3X Base Salary Life Insurance and 100% beating of stock immediately upon my death for free
Bonuses are also really high. I got a 15% bonus since company did well which was 150% of my target bonus. I got a “Meets expectations”.
Consultant 2 - which company , perks are great .
Sounds like they don’t want to say, but it sounds to me like Netflix.
Yo, don’t front the 'snacks and crap.’ I used to be the buyer of the beer stock. A grand and a half every few months on the good beers. Also, all the good snacks. That’s keeps me going.
Consultant 2, first off, they'd have to double everything you have listed there for me to live in California. The cost of living and taxes there cancel out most of your perk value. And, second, the rhetoric coming from the FB/Twitter leadership crew about their business model is running dangerously close to Enron levels of self-righteousness. Not sure I could stand behind the vision enough to be a well paid, yet compliant foot soldier. So, count me out.
