It depends on why you left and on whether it was on good terms or bad. Generally speaking, it is perfectly normal to ask for references from past employers. If you have any reason to believe they would refuse the request or sabotage your efforts, then find another reference.
That is true. I usually leave on good terms with past employers since you don’t know if you are ever going to perhaps go back or be working with them in the future!
No, is not bad to ask your former employer for a recommendations. However, I would recommend that you ask you use your manager/director and coworkers as your reference.
