People hiring now will already be considering the impending recession, so I don’t think it puts you at risk of layoffs. Plus, in my view, in-house legal isn’t a natural place to start cutting for most companies unless it’s a really big department at a really big company. Companies will look at sales/commercial first.
All I can say from my own limited experience in a smaller department during COVID is that we got busier and management would only have made a bad situation worse by trimming our department.

Counterpoint - if work slows down and you can get paid a biglaw salary for closer to in-house hours for at least a few months, would that be a bad thing?
