Listen. Rich people backpack in Europe and all kinds of stuff. Don’t explain anything. You felt like taking a break. You reconnected with nature. Doesn’t matter. We don’t live to work.
I always just say I save my commissions so I’m never stuck anywhere (which is true). Never had an issue!
Honesty?
Honesty usually works .
But if it’s less then 30-90 days I don’t put gaps in the resume it’s a ball park not an exact.
Honestly. Practice and own your story.
First off, avoid the advice of trying to cover it up with a functional resume (as opposed to chronological). Hiring managers and HR people see right through it.
Unless the gap was for something negative (“Gap due to prison sentence for attempted murder”), you can address it right in the resume. Technically, you don’t have to, as it’s your business alone. In reality, it’s better to not leave it up to the imagination of the manager reading it.
There are a lot of ways to justify employment gap in your resume, and lying is not of them. Whether you cared for your ailing parents or took time off to raise a child, you should not hide it; rather explain it. With the advent of internet, nowadays, employers can easily verify your career history. As such, honesty is always the best policy; whatever the reasons for your break in the professional arena.
You explain it the way you did here. Kinda. I was unable to find a job in my field right after I graduated, and I wanted to be doing something that made a difference, so I got this job doing..,but I'm on and off looking for a career position in my field. I'm so glad to have connected with you. And that's that. No explanation as to why you couldn't find a job in your field.
A gap of less than six months probably doesn’t need explaining—at least on your resume.
If you’ve been away from work for longer than six months for a reason unrelated to a work search, you can add a line in your resume to explain it.
“Took care of ill family member” is one I’ve seen.
Most people just ignore it on their resume, though, and provide information when asked in the interview. The employer’s fear is that you got “rusty” during that time off—always add some detail about how you stayed current in your field.
My suggesting is be prepared to briefly discuss them. Gaps happen, employers know this. be upfront about it is better than giving the impression you are trying to hide something.
Tell them you took some time off to bang hookers and do blow.
I think if you are honest and they decide they don’t want you then it was not a good fit to begin with.
