It really depends on the type (I.e. what state) of 529 plan and who manages it. I live in Indiana and our 529 state plan is absolute garbage, high fees and the average growth is around 3-4%. You also can only get the state tax benefit Indiana by enrolling in Indiana’s plan, which is a max 1k tax deduction.
With my fidelity account I’m limited to which states I could choose, but the fees are extremely low and gains are higher. I ultimately went with the New Hampshire plan because it allows me to do age growth based management (meaning I can get more conservative as the child gets closer to graduation). The 1k tax deduction that I forgo will come out in the wash with higher gains and lower fees. The gains taxes you’d pay on a CMA or brokerage account will be more damage than you’d think then taking advantage of tax deferred gains.
I wouldn’t have buyers remorse. With a 529 plan, it forces you to keep that money invested for a higher Ed. Not saying you would do this, but there’s always temptation to use money from a CMA for something else.

There is a federal tax benefit as well as you don't need to pay tax on the gains and dividends which is 15% for most here (I imagine).
Yes investment options are somewhat limited but I have access to a low fee S&P 500 index fund in both of my 529 plans which is good enough for me. What would you invest in if you had unlimited options? Plans vary by state and there are certainly some that aren't great, perhaps you can transfer the funds to a lower fee higher rated plan in another state?
I have so many accounts it's easiest to just do 100% sp500 for the ones with smaller dollars or limited investment options.

Yup. Fidelity has a S&P 500 find for the 529. Doesn’t get better than that
