Detailed transfer memos and no looming deadlines. If you can sit down with each atty getting a case and walk through them it would be very helpful.
Transfer memos should include facts, status, and outstanding tasks to complete along with any deadlines, but they should also include where to find important documents, contacts and any notes about the contacts (this person responds best via text, etc.), and any ideas or instructions about what you would have done for next steps
Agree with the other commenters. I sent my transfer memos as emails that included all of the case info (caption, court/judge, mediator, OC & Co-Def, deadlines, etc.) in addition to basic facts, quirks and notes about the case, what was in progress, and my suggestions for next steps. Attached to the email were any useful/important letters, motions or discovery items. After sending the email to whoever needed the info, I saved it to that matter's file.
Forgot to add: I also coordinated with my paralegal to make sure she had appropriate instructions on what tasks to work on and was up-to-date on the status from my perspective. That helped make sure there weren't any lulls in discovery and the attorney(s) taking over didn't need to do much right away while they were trying to integrate the new files into their work flow.
Introduce the oncoming attorney to opposing counsel via email. Makes for a more seamless transition and doesn’t look like you straight up abandoned the file in your last days at the firm. Good luck!
