My AE is a workaholic. He ruined my performance review last cycle by saying that I have calendar blocks and it's hard to get time on my calendar. I have tried to free up my calendar as much as I can. Now I asked him for feedback one on one so that the next review is not ruined. He doesn't like something else now. How to address this? Is the only way to solve this is to change account? I have talked to my manager and he can't say anything in the review. It's a weird situation. Please help

If you are unable to work it out with the AE, ask your manager to help you. Even though he cannot influence the review itself, he should be able to help work out the issue causing that review. If your manager thinks your availability is good, he can communicate that to sales leadership.

Also note that AEs will throw everyone else under the bus rather than recognize they may need to do something different themselves. They often need excuses for their performance, and I have seen way too many times, that the SEs are the first to take blame.

Exactly. AEs are salespeople and most are very self-oriented. If you are perceived as a threat to their quota then they will either throw you under the bus or work to get you out of the way.

Salespeople may be friendly but they are never your friends.

How many AEs do you support? Why do you have so many blocks? Make your calendar visible to him

My calendar is open for everyone to see. I do block my calendar for doing the follow up tasks. It looks like he is never fully satisfied and keeps bringing one thing or the other. Even though I get stellar emails from the customer directly. My concern is that he is going to ruin my hard work again at the end of the year and I'm trying to avoid that

This is odd. I’m surprised they didn’t move you to a new AE

Realistically, is there merit to what he is saying about your calendar? this month was just mid year, it doesn't count against your year end perf (yet). you have to work with your manager- or change teams/verticals.

I do block my calendar for doing the follow up tasks. I blocked it for some training as well which was for the next level. But he never showed any concerns at that time. It was only in the review that I came to know about it. I'm concerned that the same thing is going to happen in the next review with something else so trying to be on top of it. But it looks like he is never fully satisfied and keeps bringing one thing or the other. Even though I get stellar emails from the customer directly

Additional Posts in Sales Engineers

Hi there. Ex Deloitte Sr Mgr here, currently in tech pre sales (SaaS / MarTech). Recently spoke to both Salesforce and Adobe recruiters for roles that I thought were lateral moves (Sr SA / Sr SC), therefore I did not proceed with the selection process. The recruiters from both companies told me they typically hire at that level, and people are considered for promotion to Principal in 1 to 2 years. I found that odd. Is that right? What’s the typical TC for SAs and SCs there? (15+ yrs exp).
