My boss is making me lead a new client pitch this week and I’m way in my head about it. I’m one month into the company and I’ve never lead (or even been on) a pitch. They knows this, and I don’t think I can push back or suggest she would be better suited.

Any advice on how to either rock the presentation, or ask for her support?

I don’t have the perfect solve for you, but I do just want to encourage you, and let you know that how you’re feeling is super common. I’m 10 years in and I still get a little nervous before client presentations and pitches. The one common denominator between all the presentations I have crushed, is that I know my material inside and out. That doesn’t mean I have memorized every line word for word, but it just means I have really internalized the ideas within the presentation and how they connect to one another. You have to carry conviction in what you’re saying — believe in it, and play a role in forming the deck. This helps make some of the more clunky parts of the presentation (the transitions) go much more smoothly. Preparation is your best friend. And lastly, just acknowledge the fact that you’re a little nervous about it. That’s OK, the only things we get nervous about in life are the ones that we take seriously, and that is so natural and human. You are going to do great, just prepare your butt off. Also, develop some of your own thoughts on the presentation and use your boss to pressure test them. It shows your initiative and willingness to work on the pitch while also giving you the benefit of their experience.

Go through the sever, see if there’s old pitches you can use as a starting point/template, take a stab at the pitch yourself, then go through it with your boss to ensure you’re on the right track. Make sure you leave enough time for any edits before the client meeting

Great advice!

Breathe :) Your boss either very much believes your able, doesn’t think they are more capable themselves or maybe already feels good about the new opportunity. Are you able to reach out to the potential client? Say something along the lines of “As I prepare I wanted to ask what the most important points are for you so I can ensure we touch on them?”….never hurts to ask directly “what do you want to see/gain from this? What are your goals? Pain points? What will make the client look good?”

I would ask for her support but more in the way of 'I need to know how to do it at this company' - be clear on what you want support for (e.g., 'I don't feel like I understand what the agency offers for XYZ) because that makes it a bit easier

like

Write down the key points you want to make during the presentation. This can help you stay on track and ensure that you cover all the important information. Practice your presentation multiple times until you feel comfortable with the material.

Remember: Nobody knows your shit like you do. This is your Operation, and you are the most suited person to pitch this. If you weren’t, your boss wouldn’t have put you up for it. You know its’ intricacies better than they do, their challenges, and the way your team is working to close those gaps (the offer). You’ve got this!

I would say to take a step back and take it a bit at a time. Find all the pros you know about the service/product. Find one you’re most comfortable talking about and go from there. Also don’t take asking her for help as a weak move. It’s respectable and shows you care about doing things right.

If they can see you can do it, trust it. If you fumble they will be there to help. Every first is scary until you get used to it. They want you and the pitch to succeed, the trust you’ve been given is a great achievement in a short period of time. Reassure them you’ve got it so doubt doesn’t creep into their heads. Now go be a bad ass!

So my VP at my previous company felt bad and refused to speak to me or attend my farewell after my resignation. His reason was that I somehow betrayed his trust as he had promoted me just last year (after keeping the position open for 4 months and letting me take additional work load after the previous SM left!). Does this make any sense? I mean where does this sense of entitlement or ownership over the employees come from? No wonder the company in question is kind of facing a literal exodus!
