Oh my gosh! A daredevil I would say. I feel like you can;t do much about it. Your friend is stubborn!
As a friend, I would confront her. She could literally kill her dog with what she's doing. It takes 10 seconds to google why chocolate is bad for dogs and you would have had your answer.
Oh, that's BAD bad. It's her dog, so if I am afraid you really can't do a lot to stop her. But please never stop trying.
It's not safe to feed your dog chocolate under any circumstances. The long-term implications aren't good. By the time you start seeing muscle tremors, seizures, and heart attack, you've probably waited too long to do something. I would find a way to make it known.
Dogs do not metabolize chocolate like we do. My family members used to frustrate me with this habit until I couldn't take it anymore. Your best bet is to try and show her articles explaining the risks and that you don't want them to have to pay a massive vet bill.
Whew! I'd be finding some way to get the law involved on any person that tried feeding chocolate to my dog. Too bad the dog isn't mine.
Is it white chocolate btw? There's no real chocolate in it, it's just sugar, milk, and fat. It would still make the dog sick and maybe cause pancreatitis, but not nearly as dangerous as milk or dark chocolate.
Reminds me of my neighbor who gives her dog so much chocolate I’m surprised he’s still around. I’ve told her time and time again it’s not good for him but she gives it to him anyway. The dog is very fat and has issues breathing but is happy. She gives him chocolate and a lot of treats as guilt gifts. Yikes.
Chocolate being bad for dogs is not some unknown fact. Everyone knows that. I just can't handle stubborn people. Please don't stop trying. She should know better.
There's probably not much you will be able to do to change your friend's mind and pushing it will just strain the relationship. However, I'd call an emergency vet on speaker and ask them if it's okay to give the dog chocolate and let your friend hear the answer. If she still insists, it's out of your hands.
Some people are so resistant to learning anything new that it's laughable. This is a tactic I've used with my grandpa; he goes into one of his old wives' tales and I tell him that it's not true and to Google it, I'll wait. Usually shuts him up for a while.
I wish you luck in trying to convince your friend otherwise. I've had to deal with similar situations, and sometimes there's just nothing you can say to change people's minds. I like to use chocolate toxicity calculators when explaining such to people
Be empathetic. Ask open ended questions: like why do you give him chocolate? Listen. Express your why ( that you care for pups health and have research evidence about the effects of chocolate toxicity, you care). Be respectful of your boundaries, her boundaries. I wish I could make people do better with communicating why something is beneficial or detrimental to their pet’s health, understand why they’d choose the way they do; but sometimes I can’t.
