Get this, it's less than $10 on Amazon. If you’re “doing Keto,” but not measuring your ketones, you’re just doing the lazy Paleo diet. In terms of how long, depends on the person and diet and how many glycogen stores you have in your liver. Typically 2-7 days of watching carb intake can get you into ketosis.
The nice thing about keto, you can usually find an alternative for “cheat meals.” There’s keto pizza, keto bread, keto desserts ... you name it.
If it’s too much to go keto right away, focus on slowly cutting out the non-keto foods. Cheats are doubly harmful in the beginning since your body is trying to learn to run off fats, but also because you are trying to form habits and new ways of eating. Depends on how much you restrict your carbs. In my experience limiting my carbs to less 20g net carbs got me into ketosis within a week. Make sure to supplement electrolytes to avoid keto flu! I took potassium and magnesium supplements but I think you can just get it from the food you eat. And I salted my food and had a cup of chicken broth if I felt sluggish
I have that exact bottle of pee strips posted above. I’ve since learned that strips can be very inaccurate. The only reliable way to check is a blood monitor.
If you’re doing this for weight loss: keto itself won’t burn the fat off your body — a caloric restriction is still needed. Keto helps stabilize blood sugar and make you feel fuller, so it’s a powerful tool to help.
And finally, to answer your question — I don’t notice when I’m in keto anymore, but I sure notice when I inadvertently fall out. My stomach growls, energy falls, and I feel run-down when waking up. There’s an adjustment period until you’re fully adapted, so don’t despair if you don’t feel different right away.
