Cons: it’s fricking hot from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Public transportation is pretty dicey, unless you live near the light rail corridor. Housing costs have exploded - in part because a lot of rental housing has been converted to short-term rental.
Pros: definitely a lot of outdoor options, both for hiking/biking/etc. and for larger activities like music/food/arts festivals, concerts, etc. Most of the pockets of activity here - East Valley, West Valley, downtown, uptown, North Phoenix, even as far out as Queen Creek or Anthem - have a great neighborhood vibe and plenty of social options that don’t require a long drive or ride. You’re within a couple of hours of some great scenery. It’s not difficult to meet people if you want to meet people.
Lots of pros to moving to Phoenix. I made the move myself from DC 4 years ago and love it.
Pros: lots of outdoorsy adventures, plenty of cities and areas to explore (Sedona, flagstaff, payson, etc), still relatively cheap compared to other big cities, city was made for cars so traffic is never that bad
Neighborhoods to check out for young couples: Encanto, Arcadia, downtown Phoenix, central PHX/uptown.
Avoid south Scottsdale and Scottsdale unless you want to be with the 24 year olds who still think they are in a frat.
Cons- it’s not the easiest making friends given how segmented the city/living can be. But there are leagues to join and all that if you are willing to put in the effort. And obviously summers are hot.
Housing and overall cost of living used to be cheap just a few short years ago, now it’s quite the opposite. No shortage of outdoor activities (depending on the season). Summers are brutal and people do get sick or die from lack of proper hydration. Plus, scorpions.
Pros: Tax Friendly.. Great Places to Eat.. Pet Friendly.. And the Phoenix Suns are expected to make a run at the NBA Title - Cons- Definitely the heat, Gas prices are a killer and the night life could be better because Closing and noise regulations are a bummer
I grew up here and I’m still here. I’ve been here because it’s cheap with lots of great opportunities. But the hot summers are honestly miserable and I’m trying to leave. The heat isn’t just uncomfortable it’s scary and depressing.
Appreciate everyone’s responses!
