It sounds scarier than it actually is. Don’t worry and go for it. The sooner, the better to avoid nerve damage.
Not bad at all, you don’t feel a thing with the anesthesia.
Make sure you go to an Endodontist NOT A DENTIST. Also, there is a newer tool called gentlewave that significantly improve success and recovery rate. Try to go to an endodontist that uses it. I have had quite a few - Feel free to DM if you have questions.
I had a dentist swear I needed a root canal and I saw an endodontist for a second opinion and the endodontist said nothing was wrong at all. ALWAYS see an endodontist before you decide to go under and do it.
It’s a misconception that a root canal is painful. In fact, the “pain” associated with a root canal is the pain you have before it. The root canal gets rid of the pain and is not painful at all LOL.
Rising Star
I’ve never had one but hoping it goes OK!
OP I had two in middle school (nno dental insurance plus soda diet). It was uncomfortable but not painful. If middle school me can do it you 100% can do it! It will be a breeze
Agree that it isn’t as bad as it sounds. I just felt the pressure but it didn’t hurt. I did see smoke or steam coming from my mouth from the drilling.
Just had my first one a couple weeks ago and I was scared shitless too. It’s not bad at all, the only thing that was tough was keeping my mouth open for 2 hours and my gums and inner lips were sore for about a week. But i could still workout and eat normally the next day
It was like getting an intense filling. Don’t be afraid to get the Novocain/numbing you need. I had the dentist go back 3x because I was still feeling it. But I agree with most other responders. A little sore the following days but nothing unbearable, probably from keeping your mouth open. The smell is unpleasant because if all the grinding of your tooth
I had a root canal when I was 10 (long story) really was not bad in the grand scheme of things - the adults in my life were more worried about it then I was. Intense filling is a good description. Similar to above - if doing novacaine, dont be afraid to tell them you need more. They went back 3 times for me too.
Protip - bring headphones & have a podcast ready to distract yourself!
For reference- I’ve had 2 root canals, one about 10 years ago & then one a couple months ago. The worst part is the boredom if they don’t have a tv for you to watch something on
Preferred it to a day at the office....
I’m petrified of the dentist and got through the root canal with no issue.
Lots of Novocain, no gas. I felt absolutely nothing at all, and just listened to music to drown out the sounds.
If the dentist says you need it for a tooth that isn’t currently bothering you, get a second opinion. One semester in college I went to a dentist who said I should schedule a root canal with him and I didn’t do it because I was away from home and had no money. After that I resumed going to my regular dentist during school breaks and life went on and over a decade has passed and no other dentist has ever recommended a root canal.
Piece of cake
Not bad at all
Get the gas along with the numbing shots. Trust me.
Yes! Not that scary. Definitely pay for the laughing gas if you nervous. I actually loved getting mine done because of that 😂
Super chill, some odd sensations when the plug things are inserted, but no big deal.
Recovery was quick and comfortable.
I’m a little worried about root canals but considering I got my wisdom teeth out while awake with local anesthesia I can’t imagine it’d be much worse - that was a breeze, just a lot of pressure during the drilling
