It's temporary, I think you can both cope with the distance. If you can't, I'd say that's actually kind of a red flag
I’m currently clerking and know of a few married clerks who do distance with their spouses — one who takes a 2 hour train every weekend, another who takes a 2 hour flight every other weekend (or so). Both have survived with their marriages intact, both would do their clerkships again on balance, but also both are exhausted of the travel and neither are remotely sad about their clerkships (and therefore long distance status) being over in like 2 weeks and have been counting down for months.
I was a 1hr flight/5 hr drive from my husband in my first clerkship, and a 1-1.5 hr drive from him for my next one. We got through my first clerkship just fine- saw each other every other weekend (at minimum) and anytime either of us had WFH or vacation. For my next one, we are moving halfway between my clerkship and the city where he works. It’ll be a 40 minute commute for both of us, but totally worth it. Either way, clerkships have an end date- you can do anything for a year :)
This is very helpful thank you!
I clerked 3.5 hours away from my spouse in our first year of marriage. Drove home every weekend and it was fine. Flying is far more expensive and time consuming so idk if you could fly every weekend. But either way, a year flies by. Having an end date always makes long distance easier. Clerking is worth it. Just try to make sure you end up in the same city when your clerkship is over.
Many of my co-clerks are in long distance relationships (including myself) - it’s worth it! It sucks but it’s only a year. I would be more reluctant to do it for 1.5-2 years but one year is a breeze.
With my clerkship coming to an end, I personally would not do this but that’s because my experience hasn’t been great and if I could undo it I definitely would (I moved for this clerkship too and man do I regret it). If it is with a great judge and will really open doors for you, it’s probably worth it though, just have to prioritize free time with spouse, a year isn’t that long.
I will DM you
