Hahahahaha. Don't need a shitty BMW, 3 vacations a year, 2k a month in food? Laughable. Don't need 1mm for a home if you move to the suburbs (even an outer borough) nor do you need to donate 20k to your alma mater. The ultimate #firstworldprob
No really that is REALLY ludicrous when looking at the numbers. Here's some tips I would end up giving that family if they are REALLY feeling stretched that thin:
Downgrade the BMW. Let's assume thats a $500 payment. Downgrade to something thats $300.
-$2500 a year saved
Stop donating to Alma Mater (or at least donate less)
-$10,000 a year saved
Take only one vacation a year (or better yet don't spend $6,000 PER vacation)
-$12,000 a year saved
Already they would have saved $25k just with THOSE tips. But let's not forget finding a cheaper mortgage as well. Sure NYC is expensive. But it's not impossible to find something cheaper. Even if they could shave off $500 on their payment theyd save $6000 a year there
Total: $30k more a year. PLUS the $7k they already had left.
It is annoying as hell to listen to people complain when they are in those situations. Who said you need to "live like a King" in order to feel "rich". No really. You can indeed live on less and still feel like you're living the good life. REALLY really.
That article gets written every few years. This time it was woefully inaccurate. The "struggle" is real in NYC, in the sense that $500K barely gives you an upper middle class lifestyle here. But the figures were all off in this poorly researched article.
Wait. I don't get it. They are able to fully fund their 401ks, have food, shelter, insurance, transportation(BMW LOL), clothing ANDDDD vacations and date nights.... and STILL have $600 a month left over!? I. Am. So. Fucking. Confused. 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼
Live within your means, budgeting so you have what you need plus some. This breakout is silly. My hubby and I combine for less than that and never do we complain about a 'struggle' and we still are able to enjoy the nice things in life. Articles like this need to disappear...
The larger point of the article is valid. At $500K in NYC, you're not a king. You're still a worker bee, and one false step can quickly change everything.
YES! You totally can live the good life for much less. We combine for less than that, and manage to save far more. And also - who has time to take 3 vacations a year???? No worker bee has that kind of free time.
🙄🙄
This is true.
