So annoyed,

So my work has unlimited PTO -global company. I'm based in uk and line manager is in USA. he said I'm taking to much time off and has brought it up with upper management. I have taken in total to date 22 days with 8 (4 include an operation) more to go. My performance is above target. I just feel blindsided.

Bad manager. People in the US are addicted to careers. His number is based on you hitting yours. If he can get more out of you, he will. Or he just doesn’t like you.

like

The better question is what does upper management think? We have unlimited PTO but they prefer us to keep it at 25 or under (not including holidays) as long as you’re above target but wouldn’t make us put time in if sick or taking a half day or less so it ends up being a bit more. My previous manager (around 35) at the company I’m still with was this way. It was the second company he had been with and didn’t have many responsibilities outside of work which made him think he was a true company man by not having a life other than the job. Now while I’m a bit younger than him I have a wife and two young kids. Last year he threatened and eventually did the same which landed me in some meetings with our director/vp. Once we talked and went over my numbers we laughed about it, I was transferred teams, and he was gone within 4 months. My advice is don’t let him get to you, he sounds like a workaholic that thinks his job is his personality, and talk with the people who actually can fire you. If they feel the same way then it might be time to start looking. Best of luck!

Wow. If you have unlimited PTO it should not matter how much time you take off. Furthermore if you are meeting your metrics then I don't know why anyone would be concerned.

like

Eh, yeah that feels pretty whack to me...not even an abnormal amount of time away. Have you highlighted that your performance is above target? Feels petty to me.

like

Seems to me they're being petty. If management discusses with you, bring uo your performance above target. I think it's weird that they felt the need to do that even with unlimited PTO.

likesmart

Hi same thing happened to me and I was only at 20 days off with no further days requested. Long story short their “unlimited PTO” policy is just a fake enticing perk but in reality you get the same amount as anywhere else. I was also above goal btw and still was “talked to” for having that many approved days off.

like

It's ridiculous, in the uk min is 28 days. So with unlimited PTO I will have 35 in total. I don't think I'm taking the mick but when I come to do my review this year I know that's going to be an issue.

The main reason that companies offer unlimited PTO is because it does not show up as a liability on their books. Otherwise they would have to pay out your remaining vacation time when you leave.

like

I have 22 days and all the holidays and I’m happy with that…I work remotely so i can be where I want for the most part anyways and you can work lighter on days others are out on PTO or before or after major holidays

You might be in position to go above your manager in this case. Don't let someone drive your narrative for you, especially if you feel like deserved fun is going to have a bad influence on your reputation.

like

I don’t have Unlimited PTO. Located in the US and accrue 30 days a year and can roll over 30 days a year.

like

That's nice, in the uk the min is 28 statuary including bank holidays. So I don't feel like I'm taking the piss

like

Your performance speaks for itself and that is indisputable. Make sure upper leadership is aware of your performance.

Being based in UK, if the legal limit is 28 days, non holidays included, don’t they legally have to let you take it? Is it possible for you to verify this with HR!?

If you can verify it with HR then they may need to get involved to help ‘educate’ your manager.

Also, I recommend you are networking with upper management in the company to make sure they see what you are accomplishing for the company. Don’t let your manager be your brand representative.

Set up 1:1 sessions for ‘mentoring’ to gain that visibility.

like

I'd "nicely" inform your manager of UK Law. Do you have an UK based HR Business Partner that you could discuss this with? This is the stereotypical American attitude of - everyone does what America does. We're the best!

I guarantee your manager has never been outside of the US, with the exception of maybe Mexico or the Bahamas for vacation.

like

Hi! How long have you been in the company? And what's the approach of the management regarding the PTO?

Two years, and it's always been unlimited pto since I've been here. But only been working with a USA manger the last 9 months. I have time off with kids during half term and easter etc. And every 6 weeks intake a 3 days to a week off to spend time with the two kids.

like

The US is wild, I am US and worked for UK company and miss that side of it. Unlimited PTO is rarely actually unlimited here and even rarer than that is Sales teams qualifying for that perk. Normally, companies will give everyone but Sales unlimited PTO and sales team still accrues, it’s that case at Salesforce and other companies I’ve worked at, makes me want to be a run of the mill biz analyst lol

Well vacations are supposed to be utilized, as long as your performance isn’t impacted neither you have any business impact. They have no reason to be so whiny. You can always respond with data. Show them what you did so far and why this is just a crappy move.

I am in the US. I get 15 vacation days, 3 personal....would live more if I could have them!

Bless you. Funny thing is that he can have unlimited pro.

People in the USA get like 5 days off so that’s probably why he feels like you take too much time off lol

Update, I have handed in my notice. And when doing so she replied am sure I can do the role. Also I smashed target and she was on me all the time. I had enough. Told HR they didn't do anything. Also recorded my 121 and she was vile. So I will be taking this further.

My company covers in depth results each week, including meetings set/attended, wins, revenue, retention etc. I feel as if evaluating in such depth is detrimental to the psyche, as you never get to “ride the high.” In addition, some weeks are simply slower than others, and it’s not always representative of what the results at the end of the period or quarter will be. Is this not a big deal, and I’m I placing too much importance on it? Or is it beneficial to review results less frequently?

I am considering an offer for an AE role (UK-LDN) where the base is £42k & OTE is £70k. The Regional GM has verbally promised to move it up to £50k base if I perform well during the probationary period, but I can’t have it in writing on the contract. I’ve tried to counter offer but they said I’m currently maxing the salary band (L4). This role is exciting as I’d be the first UK employee, doing the full sales cycle & more but I had the same base and ote as an SDR. Is it too low? Do I take it?

I started in my first SDR position in a small SaaS start up few months ago. I am the only SDR and their first ever.
The base salary is ok but I haven’t received any commission structure up to this day.
I book an average of 3-5 demos per week. People always show up, but the thing that worries me is that I do not have a way to track how many meetings I book in our CRM,and to be honest I feel like I didn’t get the best training overall. Should I start looking somewhere else? Thoughts?

Thanks

One strategy that came up was having the applicant do 90 minutes of cold calling into real prospects with the hiring manager coaching.

What do you think of this approach? Would be curious to hear from both hiring manager perspectives and from candidate perspectives.
