Can we cut down on this WWIII hype already?
Got a random email from a supposed Amazon recruiter for a SDE position (which is not at all a fit). The email is amazon.com domain and there are no red flags in the body but it doesn't feel like an Amazon recruiter due to the tacky signature, etc. Has anyone seen this kind of cold-calling from FAANG recruiter?

Hope you can accept this in the spirit that it's offered: I am praying for you. Hope you get well (all around).
No. Most ppl are really respectful. They’ll just say sorry to hear that you’re on leave and that you’ll feel better soon. We are all adults who work with intelligent people who know life is complicated. There are so many conditions out there that are equally private - I know people who’ve taken leave bc they were undergoing multiple rounds of failed fertility and hormonal treatments, people who’ve left for depression, people who’ve left for IBS... all medical conditions are private! Get well soon and take care of yourself, health is everything.
Thanks AC1 - don’t think we have that at my company. May be able to take an unpaid personal leave of abscence but after reading the verbiage on our portal it says it’s on a case by case basis that will be evaluated and client needs will be taken into account. Kinda paranoid because I’m on a really demanding project that’s short staffed already and I feel like I’d have to provide more detail if I requested personal leave as opposed to fmla
So should I make something up?
Who all should I tell? People mgr? Hr? Project mgr?
What kind of doctor should I see? Psychiatrist? I don’t have a primary care doc
This is a mild addiction dude. Take it seriously.
Wish I never started and just toughed out the pain
I took a leave of absence successfully for my back. I have herniated discs and in tons of pain from sitting 12-14 hours a day and not going to pt. I drew the line there and not swallowing percocets for it. Take care of yourself and go to PT and get steroid injections for it. Don’t get hopped up on pain killers to stick it out here.
Btw it’s totally third party. Your firm should have a totally separate hotline to manage the leave bc their insurance pays out your salary for up to like 6 months. All you need to tell your team is that you have a medical issue. Just talk to your dr, they’ll handle the third party insurance. If they’re giving you Percocet you prob have an underlying physical condition you have every right to take off for!
SA2 I’ve been goin to PT for it but I also took painkillers for it
Thanks sm1
Just to be clear, the conditions I’m referencing are from friends at other firms or jobs who’ve taken time off and told me about their issues when I asked a similar question to them about how to take leave. You’ll be shocked by how many ppl take off time for stuff once you start talking about it. Life is complicated!
The more I think I about this, the more paranoid I get. I started having to get more percocets off the street cuz the monthly prescriptions simply weren’t enough anymore. Paranoid about tellin the doc Cuz technically that’s illegal
1000% pay attention to you first. Your engagement team will be handled. I would assume if you call your benefits team or HR they will give you all the advice you need to get the time you need to address this, privately. You’ve got this!
No need to tell anyone outside of hr and only if the need specifics. Go now before you lose your courage
Please don’t be embarrassed. The opioid crisis is real and does not care who it is. Go to your original doctor that gave you a script, or find a new one. You want help, you just need to ask for it. They will give you your options and you guys can decide together your course of action. Work can wait, and you can just tell them it’s a back issue if you’re pressed.
Stay strong, you’ve already started the path of recovery with acknowledging your problem.
M1 when u say therapist do u mean psychologist or pyschiatrist?
If you desperately want to just do this you can even just take yourself right to the ER. I have a family member that did that due to mental illness and they took care of her and sent her to a facility for a few days. She took medical leave from there. You don’t need to disclose anything. You may need assistance from a place like this. It’s going to be tough but you’ll do it. My friend was pretty bad into heroin and got out of it. After you’re off you can manage with pain management therapy as well.
M1 sorry for all the questions but do you think your friends would mind if I spoke to them?
Stop right now. No need to go to work. This is waaaaaay more important than work and legally you are not obligated to tell any details. Forget about appearances, go now. Call for help. We all have addictions/mental health/chronic diseases. God bless you. We are all hoping you get help now.
You can do it OP!
