This is a question I should know, as I was one: I’m dealing with a third year big law associate in a matter. While I left big law a couple of years after making junior partner, I forgot how much third year associates in big law are actually responsible for cases. (I don’t remember what I did as a third year and how much as authority I had.) The reason I ask is because I don’t know how much to talk to this person or demand to speak to someone up the chain before committing to certain points.

If you’re communicating with them via email, remember that it’s very likely they are getting input from their senior and partner, even though the email comes from the junior.

If you’re constantly getting the “let me take this back to the team and get back to you,” I would ask them to invite a decision maker to join the next meet and confer. Or just say you’d prefer to communicate in writing if the conversations never go anywhere. The decision makers will be reviewing the responses to any important emails.

Either way, demanding to speak to someone higher up the chain is a dick move. The partner clearly trusts the associate to handle the conversation. If they need to get authority from the partner or their client after addressing some points or coming to an initial understanding, so be it.
