We were just informed today that our work from home/office is changing. If you work 100% in the office you get a private cube and get to park within the gates. If you work remote (only 1-2 days per week), you must share an office (you get it say Monday and Wednesday, someone else gets it Tuesday and Thursday, and the 5th day you would need to find another empty cube) and you park in general parking. Right now i work 1 day from home and every other week, 2 days. Which would you choose? Why?

1 day at home and 4 days living like a nomad in the office is not worth it to me. 2 days at home and it gets a little harder to decide. Make it 3 at home, 2 in the office and you’ve got a deal.

I should also mention, my commute is 30 minutes each way.

Hilarious. I commuted 1 1/2 hours one way into NYC, on one train and then subways with a transfer for 25 years.

Uphill both ways.

A private cube not quite what everyone wants or need

Honestly, I would find a new job. Neither is attractive and the idea of having to find a location due to a mandate is crap to me

My professional life at the moment is far from ideal. I’ve been on quarantine (long story, but a good one) for the last seven years. Royalties from my books don’t pay the bills. I have a social media presence which, in recent years, reached millions. There has to be something exciting I can do.

Curious if anyone has started doing in-person meet-ups. For eng/product/design I feel that it would be good to do occasional in-person “offsites” at the office or a wework for collaboration sessions, or just to work together every once in awhile. Has anyone started doing this? Since people are remote and spread out across the US, it needs to have justification but how do you justify “face time”/“collabs” - should it be tied to very specific projects?

If you work remote, which I assume at least some (most?) of us do. Is their any amount of money or benefits they could offer you that would make you go back to the office? I'm an SDE for a smaller company and I think it's time for me to move on, they're asking everyone to come back and offering no incentive, I know I could make the same or more working from home for someone else.

Has anyone gone so far as to splurge on a tier 1 office chair like the Steelcase Gesture? If so, your honest feedback/review would be appreciated.

My logic is if I spend so much of my typical work week sitting on a chair, why not go the extra mile and make it something comfortable and good for posture. Also, the cheaper chairs seem always to wear down faster than anticipated.

Is anyone’s company shifting to a hybrid in office/wfh model?

Can the hybrid model actually work?

People have gotten so used to just backing meetings up into each other. You logout of one and immediately jump in to another. I remember days full of meetings before but not at this volume.

I struggle believing this practice will cease with any percentage of the workforce at home. I don't subscribe to all or nothing but I'm interested in if this has been addressed. Has anyone's hybrid policy mentioned the future of meeting best practice?
