Congrats! Please don’t hesitate to share more as time goes on, it would be great to hear more about the reality of retirement from the folks in our community who make the decision to retire early.
Yes! And would love to hear about any life style creep or un expected expenses that spring up along the way.
Anxiety takes about 6 months to fade away. Hold on to those physical activity hobbies, they can carry you much further in your later years than you think. I’m about much older than you and cycle 150 miles per week and do strength training. One of my cycling buddies is 77 and he rides more than I do.
Sir please
Congrats! You're my hero!

Love it, love it!
Need to see more people in their 40s FIREing. Welcome to the club.
Haha, I'm glad you're enjoying your retirement. So what do you usually do to enrich your life?
Get a job at Home Depot and don’t touch your savings. Let it ride baby! Compounding interest!!!!!!!
lol, that’s not at all fire. Fire means NOT working at Home Depot.
Fantastic!!! Im having a break atm and its getting me so excited about retirement. It’s also teaching us to live with one income. Volunteering could be a good option. I started off fostering cats and am now helping with adoption applications and social media, it’s rewarding and often any type of org is keen for more help if you can commit regular time.
I think the move is to find real work that is meaningful. You’ve been liberated to not have to work for others, but with that freedom, maybe you should find work that is truly aligned with your values/ interests.
Personally, I fear life just chilling will get old and decay a person faster that it should.
You are right, and you don’t have to do it with someone. Just do it and you will find people along the way
I'm taking a mini retirement atm, about the same age as you. lets all enjoy this 'living life on my own terms'. happy to connect and exchange ideas
What do you do for health insurance which is probably the highest expense as we age?
I have $0 healthcare through NY State of health. But Trump is torpedoing it and many other subsidies and affordable plans next year.
@OP Congratulations!
My wife and I are in nearly the exact same financial situation as you, but haven't yet pulled the RE trigger.
We've been talking to family about retiring but suffer from "one more year" syndrome. In our case, the delay is less about financial insecurity and more about having a larger budget for more / longer international travel.
Like others here, we'd love to see an occasional update on your transition from working full time into an active early retirement.
Also just be prepared that the first 1-2 years post retirement, you may blow up your initial 'budget'. you may end up spending more than what you have initially planned for and this IS NORMAL. eventually things will settle down and you may go below your initial budget. One of the financial advisors said this is the 'Go, go years post retirement'. This is what's happening to me as I don't skimp on experiences and trying out new things even though I had to pay for them. I had some money set aside for these 'unplanned' expenses already before I pulled the trigger.
Absolutely love this and inspires me a lot! I am in similar boat but not having the courage yet to pull the trigger! I do have kids who are about to enter college and have investments for their college already but will work few more years to gather some more
Hello! can I dm you too? I’d like to discuss some retirement ideas with you haha
Congrats! How much of the $2.3m is liquid vs retirement savings?
I agree with you, that sounds great.
Congratulations! I'm gonna join you soon one of these days.
Love to hear it!
You might also think about volunteering. I volunteer with Honor Flights and Samaritans Purse. Volunteering, travel and exercise really helped me to break the work cycle when I retired. But then I retired at 66😩😩
Congrats! This sounds just like my situation. Retired in 40s and our numbers are so similar. It is awesome. I love not working. At first I tried to find work like things to do, like consulting…but, once I got used to it, I have no desire. Enjoy it! My husband and I are traveling a bit, gym, garden, bike, etc. So far so good. Enjoy!!!
I love hearing from someone in a similar situation. Congrats!!
I retired 4/5/2025 at 53. 2.9 m/4.4 NW. I have ongoing healthcare til 65 thru my employer. 7k a month of passive income outside my retirement -which I won’t touch til 62. Best thing I have ever done. The routine is a little awkward but just getting over the anxiety of not going to work. My annual spend will probably be somewhere between 110-120k a year. It’s a good setup. I started saving when I was 18. And I gave myself some mad money this first year.
Coach
That’s awesome!
Ha ha, I beat you. Savings 2.4 million, NW $3.5 million annual spend $79k
You did it man. You reached max level 100 in real life. Enjoy it !!
Drug money i guess
Yea exactly this guy is a joke. And still whining about “former job stress”. Poor little lazy man…boohoo
I felt just OK when I first saw your NW$3.4m. But then I see "early 40s", which is impressive! I also retired this year in my late 50s, with a little more NW. The threshold of FIRE is quite different for people with or w/o kids. I have one kid studying in US, another one is on his way. I have to budget 800k-1m for their education.
You are almost 50 years old. Would you still choose to have children? It is a burden. You should choose to enjoy it.
