About to get rid of my 09 Infiniti G37 which I’ve owned since 09. Not having a car payment is awesome, but the prospect of repair costs kicking in is making me think it’s time. Probably getting a 1-2 yr old certified BMW 3 series...the loaner cars seem like the best way to go.
Although I get all the points made against buying/leasing an expensive luxury/sports car, I think if you enjoy driving then absolutely get the best you can afford. Not every decision in life has to make longterm economical sense, if that was the case we would stop taking vacations as well and invest that money. I enjoy driving, I'm trading in my 3 series for an M4, I'll be taking that car on track pretty regularly, and the noise from that car's exhaust is enough to drown out all the nay sayers 😉
No car, $190K, NYC
It’s a data point. Don’t feel like it’s worth paying for a car at this salary.
$150k salary, 2005 Subaru Legacy with 172,000 on it and still going strong.
Subaru is going through a rough patch?
27. 60k. Still driving my first car, 2001 honda civic. Purchased for 3k off Craigslist in 2010.
2006 Dodge neon $250K
$100k, certified preowned Honda Accord.
Best car for the price. I have a v6 coupe and it's also pretty fun.
140k, still driving the 2006 subaru wrx wagon i bought new 14 years ago, still love driving it. its a bit over 140k miles and no major issues. Probably due to start seeing age related problems so have looked around a bit at trucks or wagons.
New cars are nice but i think 1-3yo lease returns are probably the sweet spot for value.
This thread reminds me of when I went to see the Tonight Show filming one day in Hollywood circa 1996. Beforehand, there was Q&A with Jay Leno. I asked him what kind of car he drove to the studio that day, knowing he was a car guy. He replied, 1987 Ford Fiesta. 😎
Buy what you can afford. Don’t lease. Keep the car for as long as it will run. Once you get you first car paid off, going forward use that money to save for next car.....never have to have a car loan again! I’m 53 hrs old and just bought a $60k luxury car with cash. It’s only the 6th car I’ve ever owned.
I buy what I can afford at the time - now I try to just find something under 400/month
When I see someone say 400$/m I assume they mean for 5 years at around 2.5% which is something like $22,500 PV. Which is like $1,500 in interest. So if you could instead invest at anything higher than 2.5% (There are savings accounts that guarantee this) and pull payments out, you win. (Disregarding taxes). In your cash situation, you can still invest the extra $400 per month you'd have after paying in full as well.
If I could borrow 1 million at less than 3% then he'll yeah I'd do it. But, unfortunately I can only get car loans at that rate.
1998 Fiat Cinquecento
$550k household with spouss, lease a 2019 VW Jetta and a 2019 VW Golf Wagon. Total car payment for both is $490/month - we used to own cars but figured out that with repairs it was costing us more than leases would, so this way we always have new or newish cars.
but di they lie on their EPA ratings? Fact: Jetta diesel or go home
Agree with the lease concept. We have a 2018 highlander hybrid $400/month and a 2017 Subaru wrx $250/month. Got both on end of year specials. We swap our cars out every 3 years. Been doing it for about 15 years. I’m thinking of a model x or y when the Subaru comes off of lease. And not replacing the highlander. I barely drive. Just feel silly over spending on cars. We pretty much uber or take transit everywhere these days. If I drove a lot, I would probably get a model s or a 5 series.
$200k, Tesla Model S
135k without perks, 2009 Ford explorer completely paid off and runs like a charm - don't waste your money on a car unless it's what you really really love.
2017 Highlander and Honda Clarity Electric on a lease. Clarity pays for itself from gas savings (220 per month). 2017 Highlander is 330 per month. Do not want to deal with repairs and do not want to invest too much cash upfront.
$165k, 2004 prius that just passed 200k last weekend. Replaced battery once, and that was $750
150k and I drive a Kia Soul. I know what you’re going to say. But I LOVE my car.
I make 300K, drive a 20 year old Lexus LS. Cost me 6 grand. Paid in cash, of course.

Not nocking MPG (I wish mine was better), but I once heard an economist say part of the reason we focus so much on fuel economy is because we see it every time we go to the pump. Whereas many other factors (like interest rates, length of loans, average price of repairs, insurance rates for that model, etc) may end up costing us than the MPG difference, but are relatively hidden so we don’t focus on them.
No one says “the best part? A civic costs 50 bucks less per month to insure than a Mercedes!” Despite that being a full tank of gas.
