I chose new friends who drank like I did so I didn't stick out. I'd pick fights. Even that circle started to get small. I tried to "manage" my drinking so I could be around people in a socially acceptable way. I had material success but I was very lonely.
What it's like now: I'm almost one year sober. In the last week I noticed what a community of true friends I have access to if I work it. People in AA who want to be around me for me. I don't feel insecure, they are just like me. This weekend I got invited to brunch, randomly, and I went and met NEW people without fear. They are pretty cool. While walking down the street, I randomly passed another AA who invited me to wing night with the guys. I have people I can call and just talk to and tell almost anything to. Most importantly some of my old friends and family have started accepting me back into proper company and I don't have to hide who I am. I still have to work on my instinct to isolate though. I'll Keep coming back.
Dang! All amazing stuff and “wing night” ta boot! I need a wing night

Congrats and thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for sharing your story, and congratulations on almost reaching a year. That's so awesome and hopefully you feel proud of yourself. It's amazing the sort of insights so we can discover in our sobriety. Keep coming back!
