Would you rather get a 20% raise or an extra six weeks of PTO? For me I would take the raise…

I’m too European for this thread - how’s it even a question

like

What’s guaranteed. Why is pto not guaranteed

6 weeks of PTO is only a 11% raise. Yeah I’d take the 20% raise over the 11% raise

like

Life is like a sandwich -- no matter which way you look at it, the bread comes first.

likefunny

Is that a Forrest Gumpism? I like it very much.

Clearly 6 weeks extra- can’t get that time back

like

The extra 6 weeks, but with a caveat; it has to be uninterrupted. No matter how badly the house is burning, if I put in my time, it has to be uninterrupted, and they can't fire me during this time because of that rule.

One can dream, but in this world I’d go with the 20% raise.

like

I would rather have the time with my family ❤️

like

Extra 6 weeks of PTO, that's really an enormous amount of time on top of my current PTO.

like

The raise - zero question

like

Same, if you’re in the US, extra pto means nothing but you’re not working and a waste of investment for the company

like

The raise 100%, 6 weeks only matters if you can afford to use it, which I cannot.

like

Time off. Definitely the time off.

like

Depends on the job. If it was physically demanding and the extra pto let me work longer maybe the pto. Some jobs are still pension based and working a couple extra years can make a huge difference in the retirement payouts.

like

PTO 💯
An extra 30 days of PTO would more than double what we get, and would be life changing. I don't work for money in its own right, I work to pay for life. More money only matters if I have the time to enjoy it.

like

Unless I can cash out on the PTO while working, I'm choosing the raise.

like

Take the raise, the PTO is not guaranteed from year to year.

I'd take the raise every time. I don't take the PTO anyway, every time I do without fail the people in my department always complain,

USA - raise.

EU - PTO

the raise , nothings guaranteed. depending on the company/job some times you have to use it in same year and sometimes you loose it if you part ways. money talks

I would personally take the latter: free time is a precious commodity that many companies are trying to monopolize [these days] -- the value of free time and focus is worth more than a salary increase in my book.
The answer you're likely to get depends on the region where the employee is working: those of us in the USA (for instance) get the short end of the stick in terms of PTO, whereas some other cultures (like Germany) add a higher amount of PTO in as a legal baseline requirement for work.

Agree. Six weeks without commuting, paying for gas, plus the 20 percent increase is not exactly free cash. Higher deductions and higher tax bracket.

This question could be thought of as asking: "do you like money or time?" Someone pointed out that the time equates to only an 11% raise but I would call that blind math; it's possible that time is more valuable to you for your own reasons. I might be inclined to take the PTO because I believe I could work on a personal project or contract that will net more than a 20% raise - I very well might not but then the experience of trying might be at least as valuable.

Never chase the money. Twice I took jobs that gave significant pay raises but has less time off, and both times I regretted it. The funny thing is that I left the second for a job making far less that offered greater time off and flexibility, and the environment was so conducive to me being productive (and my bosses saw that) and within three years I had surpassed my previous highest salary, and within a few more years I was making 30% more than that.

I always pay my balance in full each month and have never missed a payment, how is 8% credit utilization determined to be that big of a risk that my score got immediately wrecked, I don’t understand

I've been a government attorney for nearly three years now and have worked in the same office/division since I passed the bar. On the other hand, it's hard for me to imagine negotiating because (given my inexperience), I don't feel I'd be able to do better anywhere else. Any advice?
