I'm at a small PE Shop (~$50M in AUM) in LatAm and recently got an offer from Mckinsey, TC is around the same (~$90k/yr with bonus). Fund will probably hover around 27% IRR and will open up raising a larger fund. Should I seriously consider Mck and try to make partner or stick with the fund and see how it plays out?

Rant: I interviewed at a mid size firm for Senior Tax Associate role and went really well. Partner calls after a couple days to say they want to offer me a job and asked me if I wanted senior 1 or 2. I said senior 2 since I have a years experience as a senior and she was okay with it and discussed salary. She said she will think about the final offer and let me know. A week later she comes back to tell me that my small firm experience probably won’t help much and it would be difficult for me...

How can you stay at big law firms long term with out wanting to become a partner? Any specific practice groups or situations where this can happen? I like the salary and work, but don’t care for partnership.

Hey peeps, looking for ur advise. Getting offered an SM role outside big 4 with a firm working with mid size businesses. I have a great relationship with the Partner, plus also know the head of consulting in the new firm (overall good impression). They want me to build a new practice, and success in that could pave the way for the partnership. The compensation is also good and won’t get the same even if i get promoted in my current firm. What questions i should ask to qualify the opportunity?

B4 Sr Tax Mgr here LCOL but 20 years’ experience, thinking about going to midsize firm for 15% bump in comp, new firm has unlimited pto (barf) but a clearer path to partner. I’m not getting any younger but like where I am at now. Seriously stumped for the first time in my career as to what to do. Sick of following the money but also feel as if I am underpaid. My firms bonus structure is based on “billed out” (what a partner actually bills to the client) dollars instead of actual hours billed. So you can work 2000 hours but the bonus is based on only 1850 hours, because 150 got cut over the year. Is this normal? It seems entirely unfair and makes it impossible to get a bonus.

It has been communicated to me that I am not Partner Track. If you were in my position, would you accept a role in industry that matches your current comp but is a true 9-5 job?

@partners - I have two opportunities. One is to lead a group for a corporation (industry). The other is to join another consulting firm, doing the same work that I am doing now. While the comp will be better to stay in consulting and I do like the idea of becoming a partner one day, I am intrigued with the steady industry role... any advice?

I am not in Big4. Is a Managing Director in Accenture an equity partner? I assume similar responsibilities as Partner, but lower comp if it’s not equity?

Any tips for studying for the bar while working in a very stressful high output oriented (surprise surprise) law firm where the partner loves setting you up to fail so he can keep paying a low salary? I really don’t feel like Audit is for me. I just feel like a lot of what we do is like not clearly right or wrong, and we shoot for just “good enough” which stresses me out. I’ll want to do something right and my manager is just that’s fine just prepare it and if partner wants it changed then we change it. I do enjoy accounting but I’m always so confused at interpreting client files. I’m an A2 and to me (whether right or wrong) I feel like a failure until I reach $120k in salary (cont).

What would you do if you work on a niche area for your city and like your job, but are underpaid by a solid $12k base or $8k when you factor in bonus. Which big 4 has the highest average target compensation per partner?

I’m a 5th year associate at an AM200 firm where typical partner track is 7-8 years. The firm is pretty hush re partnership likelihood, but I’ve always gotten good reviews, met hours, and even generated a little business.

That said, I honesty have no idea if I want to be partner. I don’t know what comp looks like, collection expectations, equity buy-in, or benefits looks like.... when is the appropriate time to ask these questions? I’d hate working another 3+ years for something I don’t want.

What does a strategic partner manager at a tech firm do? How’s the salary?

Anyone else in transactional law struggling with the perverse incentives of keeping your hours under the flat fee you’re billing for the deal but high enough to meet your target? My managing partner gave me extensive praise that all my deals are under budget, but my hours are just under my target for bonus (bonuses can also be given on a discretionary basis, but who wants to risk that?)

I'm a solo bringing in Associate to become partner. Associate has been compensated with a base salary, plus 1/3 of earnings for business he brings in. Firm expenses are around 55-60% of gross revenue. He brings in around 30% of revenue. How best can I bring him in, and at what percentage to be fair? Was thinking 20%, with 5% incremental increases as his business grows hopefully to greater than 30% of total revenue. Thoughts?

Help with salary negotiations for spouse? He is a senior associate at a small but successful Plaintiffs firm valued around $10 million (questionable number). Was offered equity partnership but turned it out as he would prefer to be a non-equity partner (multiple reasons). He currently has a base salary of about $150k and gets anywhere from 25-100k in bonuses from the associate bonus pool. Cases brought in are treated differently. The two options we’ve thought of so far are....

Crossposting here and in biglaw. Our FY ended Sept 30 so we're in bonus/annual raise time. I originated about $80k of work, all collected. I get 100% "origination credit" but that doesn't count for anything unless you're a partner. As an associate, what's a fair ask for a share of my originations? 20%? 10%? Be happy I have a job still?

Interested in comp too, but supposedly Glassdoor is fairly accurate, so ok if you don’t want to share. More interested in where someone with 3 YOE with consulting partner, 4 certs, and SAAS sales internship experience may come in and what the growth opportunities/timeline look like.
