According to data from Challenger, Gray & Christmas, US companies cut 108,435 jobs last month, the most in any January since the global financial crisis.

While many blame AI for recent layoffs, some observers are beginning to wonder if the technology is being used as an excuse for other internal issues in a phenomenon known as “AI-washing.” I think this is definitely happening. What do you think?

Poor company performance, hesitation in the economy, are more likely issues than AI coming in and taking jobs. At least right now. I do see bloated fields getting cut with AI, but it’s a mix of factors.

AI is having an impact . Employers would be foolish to continue paying wages/taxes and benefits for employees doing the work computers will do for free. When push comes to shove , most people would rather pay less than be taken care of
by a person.

Many companies would rather have better profits than pay people. I’m cheap, but I hate checking myself out at stores, ordering on kiosks or calling customer service and being unable to reach someone. Nor do I see that it has resulted in cost savings for me. I will pay more to receive service but I shouldn’t have to pay extra for basic customer service!

Weird. I just read where January added more jobs than originally expected. 130,000+ Appears to all be coming out in the wash.

It’s hard to be motivated when rounds of layoffs happen and you see all your friends leave. But one thing that’s gotten me through all of this is working out. And when I say workout I mean the most pathetic, sad, barely completed beginner-level cardio dance routines. I’ve somehow forced myself to move while on lockdown and it’s somehow forced me to feel better. Whatever you’re doing, wherever you are: get up and move even if you don’t finish or end up going on a walk. Pls take care of yourself❤️

Hey all, Happy Monday. Curious for feedback on how you've seen severance offers approached.

My prior companies have always been what I thought of as average: min of 2 weeks plus extra week for every year for ICs, min of 4 weeks plus extra week for every year for managers, etc. for Directors & beyond.

Current co refuses to offer more than 1-2 weeks, max. I had to go to bat recently for a 3 year + manager level only to get 3 weeks and my leadership team is NOT happy with me.

So I've had 2 hiring managers and several recruiters from Amazon reach out to me about applying for some open positions with the company (android). I completed the coding assessment and now they want me to go through a round of 5 hour interviews next week. Is there a good chance I'll be hired if engineering managers are reaching out to me? I'm really not sure how badly I want to work for them and I don't want to be laid off months after being hired on. Anyone know what Amazon hiring is like?

I spent two years as an executive, and while I was providing what I believe was impactful work, and receiving praises across the board, I got fired from one day to the other without any explanation.

After a few weeks, some managers (who were under me) shared that there had been a while campaign raised against me for a couple of months by others VPs and shareholders. 1/2

A friend was told their firm will cut ties EOY if certain things don’t improve. Friend had planned to quit in the next year anyway (to start their own business), so there is no real incentive to bend over backwards. Friend’s goal is to keep the income for a little longer, but to minimize conflict / headaches. What’s the best move here? Wait until EOY and take the severance? Give 6 / 9 / 12 months’ notice now? Is there such a thing as too much notice? Could too much notice backfire?

I think I have work trauma not sure how it’s clouding my ability to make decisions. I’ve had unstable work after being laid off from a company 3 years ago. I thought I worked out a plan to get to a stable place but my job is proving to be unstable yet again. I secured a FT role at another company but because it’s a lot less money I’m unsure because I feel very cynical about companies in general. I assume it’ll be just like all the rest but now I’ll just be making less and could get laid off.
