After 30 at state, a new micromanager who know Nothing about my unit's work. Absolutely everything is under scruitiny. We can't do anything without permission. When I was trying to explain my experience they snapped, "I don't care." I am highly competent, but nothing is right under the new world order. I've started job hunting, but my age is a major barrier. Young folks assume I'm near retirement, but I can't retire for 10-14 years. Any tips for surviving?

Been there, done that! Forgive me for sounding preachy but the only advice I can offer would be to work as if you're working for God. I had to do this several months ago. The manager had it in for me from Day 1, but since I needed the job I took it and tried to make the best of things. As long as I liked/hated what she liked/hated, ate lunch with the staff EVERY day, treated our customers like crap, and snitched on any and everybody whenever possible, she was happy and I had free reign to do as I pleased in the office. Once I strayed from any of that she made my life a living hell! I knew it was the job because I would become physically sick after 11:59pm Sunday night and make a miraculous recovery at 5:01pm Friday night. When discussing this with friends, one of them told me to do my job as if I'm working for the Lord. Well let me tell you... it worked! I got up extra early so that I could complete the more detailed part of my assignments without her constant interruptions and those of her cronies, and I stayed at least an hour after everyone left to ensure my desk was clean and in order so the next day could be started afresh. Whenever she was out of the office I used that time to search for work online. When I was granted not 1 but 2 interviews for the same agency, I used PTO to attend. I could've jumped as high as the moon when they told me that I was hired and had to decide which location I wanted to work in. It gave me the greatest pleasure in the world to resign via email ONE MINUTE before my start time! What made my quitting even sweeter was I had already packed up everything of importance beforehand so there was no need for my to return or have her rifling through my personal belongings. Even better, the program ended abruptly and she came to MY job seeking work... PRICELESS!

Change your mindset and keep reminding yourself that you are better than this and you will find the right job soon. Put feelers out, dust off that resume, and stay positive. It WILL get better!!!

I've heard a couple of things about how the partner pension amount @ PwC is determined, both similar in approach.

Both calculations I have heard of result in an annuity paid until death, at which point a surviving spouse (if any) receives the annuity.

The first calculation I have heard is that you get 80% of your highest earning year as a partner (e.g. If your best year was $1M, you'd get $800k as an annuity).

The second calculation I have heard is that they look at your three highest earning years as a partner, and take the second highest and you get 100% of that. (e.g if your three highest earning years were $1M, $800k, and $1.2M, you'd receive $1M as an annuity).

Is ANY of this true, or just all rumor? Any PwC partners that can chime in and explain the pension plan fact for fact? Perhaps with sample numbers?

I went from making $70k the last 7 years to now started a new job a month ago making $130k plus $10k bonus every year, and $60k in RSUs. I have $70k in my 401k and around $50k in savings. Want to get out of the Silicon Valley which has been home my whole life and buy in TX or AZ a ~$400k house. I have about $20k in student loans which my dad has offered to pay (wants to make up for never supporting me) but I’m waiting to see what Biden decides for student loans. Is this feasible? I am fairly green in academia (< 1 year) and I want to shift to an area of research which I always wanted to do but never could as a Ph.D. student (because of conflict of interest).
The issue I am facing is that due to lack of my documented research experience in this field (read, lack of papers) I am finding it very hard to land any grant and reviewers keep saying "The PI hasn't demonstrated any experience in said research" blah blah.
Any advice on how to overcome this?
