Put in 18k, whatever percentage that is for you
Go all in on ESPP
NYC 10% / 10%. I may have to have roommates and a tiny subway commute to get to work but it's doable. I try to be careful about limiting how much I eat out and spend on clothing and, and savings climb very, very slowly.
Same as A5.
Analyst doing 10 / 10 to ESPP and 401k. Similarly my savings goal (outside ESPP/401k) climbs soooo slowly. Thinking of ESPP as a savings vehicle in and of itself makes the slow savings growth a little less stressful. Worst case scenario, 1) you can withdraw from ESPP if needed, or 2) sell your stocks as soon as they pay out
Espp should be at 10% and I only do 6% for 401K since that's the Max match.
Always do whatever you can to max 401k at the $18k. Otherwise your flushing money down the toilet getting taxed on $$ that could be protected.
more in both :)
Track for what? You should define your own goals
Fellow analyst here, depends on your city and other expenses. I’m in nyc and found myself being killed by the city and state and federal taxes and with 401 and espp deductions find that one paycheck is barely enough to cover rent now. Totally depends on the money you need each month to pay rent, expenses, credit card in full, and buffer for unforeseen expenses
First, 401k contribute at least up to employee match then max out your espp - guarantee return. Also, don’t think about contributions to 401k in terms of percent, goal should be to max out at 18k.
You should be maxing out both. You’ll thank yourself in 20 years
Max out the ESPP at a minimum. It’s free money
Max both!
