Any advice for being the lone office administrator/HR generalist for a opening businesses?
I'm having a bit of culture shock from my last job with a huge company and could use some words if wisdom.
I knew going into this job things would be different and I believe in the work we will be doing -- this is a substitute abuse recovery program for youth.

What are you specifically struggling with? What type of culture is it now? Does it feel more like an internal struggle (can I do this?), a workload issue ( so much to do and I’m it) an external misalignment ( my boss/ colleagues are difficult t work with) etc

Leverage the network you have to build further. You will need people you can trust in benefits legal and compensation etc. Join or create a round table of other solos to share ideas and support each other.

Lower expectations. You’re used to many things working by themselves. Not anymore, now you’re spinning them. It’s a great opportunity for you to learn nuts and bolts of HR! Try to enjoy it, experiment how to make things better, automate more

I’ve been in the same situation. Focus on what’s important and delivers the most impact, both short term and long term. Most importantly, understand you are only one person and can only do so much, so try not to feel overwhelmed. Often times you will catch yourself spending more time than you would like doing repetitive work - try to automate whatever you can so you can also spend time on strategic work.

Automate all you can. Lots of front end work but worth it.

Does anyone know the typical timeline for hiring more junior legal policy positions in a new administration? Is March the norm for junior hires?

Hey All,
I finished a third round interview, and HR contacted me that afternoon saying I had positive feedback across the board and they would contact me the next day regarding next steps. It’s been two days and they finally get back to me saying they haven’t been able to sync with the hiring manager but will keep me posted. Honestly I wish they would talk with the hiring manager and then let me know the decision instead of checking in. It’s messing with my emotions.

Anyone have any advice or insight on interviewing for a GS General Attorney position? I’m really excited and working to prepare for an interview I’ve been offered. It’s 3 part, on one day. 2 one on one interviews and a panel interview. For reference, it’s a position in an agency that’s involved in both trade and national security. I’m a litigation junior associate in private practice now, but have a long academic background in international trade, policy, and security.

Hi all!
Would love some insight on how you went from an HR assistant/coordinator to an HR Generalist. I’ve been in the HR world for 8 years, and only in the last 2-3 have I really done real HR work. The first company I was at didn’t have a solid HR team so I don’t really count that. I feel like I’m ready to take on more responsibility and learn more. And of course make more money.

I have looked into getting SHRM certification. But should I go back to school and get my masters in Hr?

SPHR exam- has anyone ever been “randomly selected” for an application audit? Guess I’m not really looking for a solution here, just venting.

Hi There - I work for an organization that has retail locations. I had the team lead call me this morning (a Saturday) because he had to send a new employee home. The employee he sent home had a mental health episode shortly after arriving to work. The team lead had asked him to be on order taking duty to work on the new employee's customer service skills. The employee said he could not interact with people today and when pressed further started to cry and said he (new employee) felt like he wanted to hurt someone else or himself. The team lead had the new employee call someone to come pick him up.

My question is, has anyone else ever had to deal with a similar situation in the pas where an employee admits he could be a danger to himself or others?
