Stop eating gluten and dairy.
Stopped gluten a year ago and it helped tremendously. Great advice for anyone out there who hasn't tried this yet!
I am one that deals with chronic illness. To be honest each busy season is a little bit tougher and I’m contemplating how much longer I can even do busy seasons. I’m not sure what chronic illness you are faced with but feel free to message me and we can talk in further detail. Hang in there, I know it’s tough.
Yes!!!! I already had to use one day during my quarterly
going into my first busy season and also worried about this....it’s always hard to find the balance between taking care of yourself and not giving in to whatever you’re dealing with
I am also someone that deals with chronic illness, and to be honest, it’s tough! Also does gets worse with the stress and the uncertainty of the job itself...I am also wondering how long I can stay, even though I do like my job.
Talk to your hr rep first and then teams. I generally need consistent sleep due to a medical condition or else I can't function. We started the disability process and made modifications to keep me functioning. I am a high performer with minor modifications. My teams would rather me go to bed at a reasonable time and be very productive the next day then produce crap at all hours of the day and night. That being said, I have stayed up to 3 or 4 on rare occasions but it took me almost a week to recover.
Noise cancelling headset and modification to my schedule. Number of hours remained the same but formally approved leaving at certain times so teams couldn't override it. I generally have very supportive teams regardless, but it was better formalized in case of ending up on something with more strict requirements.
Informally, I would keep my teams informed of my schedule and make sure to pull my weight. My office tends to have a get your stuff done, but we don't care where attitude to begin with which helps.
OP I live with a chronic illness and I find that proactive and regular communication helps. Every few days I need to leave early or on time to charge my medical device and insertion site. This takes a few hours and can be quite painful.
On my jobs I’ve introduced team calendars so my team can plot my changing days and also plan their own commitments. I also find starting those days with reminding everyone “I need to leave on time today for X” helps set expectations. Counsellor buy-in helps as well.
The good thing about this job is that we’re able to be pretty flexible - you just need to let the team know your medical needs and be willing to talk about flex options (e.g. start early, finish early). Remember that teams/managers/counselors can only help you if you let them know what’s going on and what you need - it may feel awkward but it’s worth it to keep your health manageable.
Best of luck in this busy season!
The team calendar has worked so well on my audits! It helps for stuff like this and gets rid of the expectation that no one can leave if someone is there.
You can try going on a flexible work arrangement with your company so you work a certain number of hours that still allows you to get enough sleep
And if it’s a legit illness or disability you’re dealing with they should understand. As long as your supervisors are understanding and okay with it i wouldn’t worry too much about what others think.
One of my best friends had UC and when she was in busy season and very stressed she had the worst flares and was very sick. She made it until senior 1, then went to industry and hasn’t been that sick since. I have crohns, but it’s a milder case. I’m a manager now, but busy seasons are tough. I try to eat a basic diet so that my symptoms are not further enhanced by things like dairy. I think mental strength is important too. I try to have a “this too shall pass” mentality. I think it all depends on the severity of your disease though. Some people with chronic illnesses are in worse state than others and this job just straight up isn’t doable for them. Others aren’t as bad off and can handle it.
