Anyone FIREd (or intending to soon) in Spain? Which city, hows the cost of living and overall experience? Taxes are very high and the 'socialist' theme (people are less driven to give their fair share, dependent on the govt) seem to be cons for several people posting their sentiments online. i'm not sure how true these are.

Try going on vacation there for a month, staying in the same place the whole time and doing your own cooking. See how you like it.

Personally I love Spain as a vacation but wouldn't want to live there because my friends and family aren't there.

After visiting both Spain and Portugal a number of times, personally I’d prefer Portugal. Just seems a lot more chill and people are nicer.

What’s the heat like in summer?

I am considering this option. Good cost of living/ quality of life balance. Taxes are high but not as high as people think in USA and highly dependent on tax type. For instance, property taxes are 1/10 compared to USA

thanks d1, this clarified my reservation about the PIT. Not too bad really then

Income tax is 50%, but poor-quality healthcare is free. We have a socialist government with open borders. This is downhill from here, and Spanish culture is being lost. It will become like France.

D2, where did you find the 50% income tax?

Considering an offer to go from firm (4 YOE) to become a privacy/product counsel for a tech company (non-faang). One concern for me is the potential of a recession in late 22 into 23 with the fed rate hikes. My fear is if that happens, me being on the chopping block as new in house counsel. If I stayed at the firm, I feel reasonably secure as an associate of not being laid off due to the market. How do in house counsel positions typically fare during lay off cycles? Any experiences to share?

Although Amazon has instituted a hiring freeze and layoffs are probably on their way, I went through the loop for a security engineer position at AWS. Before I attended the final interviews, Amazon placed the hiring freeze and called me to ask if I wanted to go ahead or cancel my application. Hey! Any Google folks know if it’s possible to negotiate fully remote if a contract role is hybrid? Personally, I don’t want to relocate and go to the office on a contract role given the current economy. Plus, I’m assuming contractors are the first to go in layoffs. I just think it’s a fair trade off if I’d be allowed to work fully remote. I’m also trying to have flexibility to manage my Airbnb business in a different country. Same time zone as the home office if I’d travel weeks at a time.

I was once at a dinner with a second year analyst, consultant, and partner, and the analyst said he planned on retiring by 30 and the partner and consultant laughed. Little did they know, the analyst owned his own home and rented all the rooms out so he payed no rent, never ate out, only grocery shopped, and very very rarely bought anything new. He saved most of his income, and was perfectly content with just his video games. That man was serious about not being stuck working forever.
