Can someone explain in layman’s term what is sales engineering?

My boss asked me what id like to do moving forward at work. The department im in has gone under many changes the past few months. I was really hoping the business would put me in a place they “need” me but instead it’s up to me…
My goal is to reach the top, climb the ladder and one day be CEO. I have a lot of outside influences that make this a possible venture.
I’m currently in sales but don’t know if the right path is to continue in.
What should I say to my boss, knowing I’m on right path?

I have been practicing as a patent prosecutor for 10yrs and I really have grown to dislike drafting. I've always had an interest in litigation but never seem to have opportunities at the firms I've been at to gain experience. I am a career changer on mo 4 of a 6 mo sourcer/researcher contract that I’m not sure will be renewed due to team re-organizing.
