Week between Christmas and new years eve should always be free. I would take this as a serious question and reply honestly to her if your company is doing something different than taking the week off.

🤭 I'm the opposite. My boss wanted me to work overnight because the clients requested and I replied “tell them it can't be done and that we need to rest”. 😂

Coming from someone who started her first "adult career job" at 22, I was really insecure and felt bad about taking time off at my company.. Even when I did take time, I still got emails and notifications, so I always felt plugged in. I was also always intimidated by PTO policies even though my job had flexible PTO. My boss sat me down one day, very gently, and reminded me how important it is to take care of myself mentally and physically. He assured me that I will be my most productive when I have a healthy work/life balance. He also reminded me that if I am getting emails and notifications, it's okay to ignore them until I am back to work.
I would advise that you be gentle with her. She might be a Type A workaholic and your company culture could be completely different than her background. Your tone is everything. Your write-up responses to her seem kind of rude and frustrated. Can you speak to her as more of a mentor, forgive what you feel to be a stupid question, and encourage her to take time for herself? For some that takes years to master...even a lifetime.

I'm jealous (not the best word but can't think of a better one) of the people that can uproot their lives and do this. My personality is a much better fit for a European country, but I can't imagine moving away from my family. I imagine my wife would feel the same, and she already moved to US while her parents remain in the Caribbean, but that's at least a short flight from Miami.

I sometimes for unknown reasons show as green at like 5am. When I'm still asleep. I dont take teams status seriously anymore.
Me: "I'm trying to decide how serious to take your information request... I no longer believe you're capable of taking a day off so why does it matter whether we get time off? Seriously. You seem to thrive in the world of "yes, I've been drugged, and kidnapped... I'm awake as an organ scalper physically removes organs out of my body but... the Wi-Fi is great here, so I'm totally available by phone... or if need me, like 15 minute response time on emails."
Jesus, relax, it was a question lol. If you want to talk with them about them not taking time off to the fullest try to understand why they feel like they can’t.
Not a fan because that ruins wlb and sets expectations for other people, but do you think she just had her phone and light set to green? There is a big difference between that and sitting at a wedding with your laptop out 😂

Oh this is a supremely buried lede. Your org has unlimited PTO and a woman who is 24 and seems to only have had poor boundaries + difficult work environments does not know whether to trust the policy.
That’s. Normal. there have been several studies that show unlimited pto == employees taking less pto due to social pressure
Does anyone really work between Christmas and New Year's Day? What are you doing? We're not pushing a new release. We're not signing any contracts. None of your bosses are probably there. We can fool ourselves into thinking that anyone in the office isn't just watching YouTube and taking it easy and force them to work or we can generously let people unwind a bit and come back fresh in the new year.

We've spoken at length about her inability to separate work time from personal time. She was online during her sister's wedding (where she was MOH), she was online during her aunt's funeral.... I understand that work may be a source of escapism, but this is nuts.

OP, struggling to understand the issue, could you please explain? Just wondering if I have too much of a sheltered WLB friendly job because we get the week off and in your firm it’s frowned upon or something like that and so it seems like a silly Q for a new joiner to be asking yourself?

It’s common in advertising for shops to shut down the week between xmas and nye.
Not unheard of in manufacturing too.
If you want to help her suggest some career counseling/therapy that will help her understand the role of work in her life or a class like designing your life. If you don’t care and it won’t keep you up at night you can send her to investment banking and she may confront this demon in a few decades
Tech companies and manufacturers do this too. This week off is to retool a production line… do maintenance… for example.
Dell gives most employees a week off and they are around 150,000 employees.
