Currently a transactional junior associate at a v10 from a non brand name law school. Thinking of applying to a top 1 year MBA (maybe Kellogg or NYU) to explore non law career angles. Would ideally like to work at a startup maybe as chief of staff/legal counsel blend? Has anyone done something similar and would the MBA provide any value add in terms of education, network, or not being pigeonholed as a lawyer?

No but i am in the same boat. Thinking about mba but the opportunity costs doesnt make much sense at this point with our salaries. I’ve looked into online mba. Michigan is a top 10 business school and has one. Still, its hard to see how one can continue to do this job and also work towards an mba at the same time.

So if you are going to do it, you will probably have to leave your job

I mentioned a similar path to a few friends, as getting a job doing anything out of big law is near impossible because of the change in compensation.

You could waste the money on an MBA, or you would just quit. Spend dramatically less money on a two month adventure, then take a job doing anything business related (you will get one once the handcuffs are off), and use that and the networking from the adventure to score an awesome role.

Operations and legal counsel are not the leaders in the startup ecosystem that they are in the business and legal fields, and in many ways are seen as a necessary but secondary contributor to the otherwise more influential and valued engineer’s role.

If you choose to take the opportunity cost of time, money, and career progression in law to enter into a startup as a member of the operations staff, make sure you enjoy operations work, as that will be your role without the technical wherewithal to contribute to product or features.

I wanted to do this, but do a 2 year degree. However, finding two letters of recommendation is difficult now that I’m 6 years out of school. Can’t really tell my boss I want to do an MBA…

I started a company just under 1 year ago. We sell a product via ecom channels and have done ~100K in revenue with a 60% gross margin.

The first 6 months I was working a full time job. I quit my job to focus on the business full time, and have since depleted my readily available capital. I’m bootstrapping the business with my own funds. I was recently offered a job in my old industry for 80K per year. I was previously making 62K.

Should I take the job?

Based on your experience, which of the two has the best/better exit opportunities (should I decide to pursue the finance realm or something else) and better work life balance? The bigger pay as an analyst is tempting, but the company benefits are meh.

I will be grateful if anybody willing to share what the day role looks like and what I need to look out for in an interview. Thanks. Cheers.

I'm at a career juncture and have decided on a career in anti-money laundering as my new path. I'm also highly interested in additional education to further my career and am eyeing graduate school. Which is best? A law degree or a master's in international relations? Those are where my interests lie. I keep reading that JDs are valued in compliance but am wondering if a different graduate program is better for my goals. I already plan to obtain the CAMS certification. Thank you!

I'm in a litigation, about 9 months in. Is it normal that I spend majority of my time making bundles for my partners (printing, binding, moving docs in a different order whenever there are new documents or he wants to add stuff) reviewing documents and making tables (e.g. dates, which documents are from where), and the only legal work is like notices of admission, list of documents, the occasional research? I'm so bored and I want to quit but I don't know if I have unrealistic expectations.
